Examining footprints

In this experiment you are going to investigate the change in appearance of footprints made under several different circumstances and see if they can be used to help solve a crime.

You will need a sandpit, a rake, a measuring tape or metre ruler, a heavy bag and a volunteer.

For each trial, record the average distance between steps and their appearance in a table of results, and any other observations such as the depth of the print. Between each test, the sandpit should be raked. The same volunteer is to be used for each test.

The tests:

1.                   Walking across the sandpit

2.                 Jogging across the sandpit

3.                 Sprinting across the sandpit

4.                 Limping across the sandpit

5.                 Carrying a heavy bag on your back

6.      Carrying a heavy load in-front of you
