Welcome to the evaluation page! Now that I've started watching subs (thanks to DVD) Some series will have a dual rating. An "S" by a rating means the subtitled version, and a "D" means dubbed. Ratings are 1-10 with 10 being the best) I'm trying to purchase DVDs for some series already reviewed, but no promises. A DVD rating rate the extras included on a DVD this using a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the best.

El-Hazard Tenchi Muyo Magic Knight Rayearth Project A-koGhost in the Shell Ah!/Oh My Goddess!

El-Hazard

TV 7.75

OAV 1 9.25

Having now seen both the TV and OAVs I've learned a leason and will get OAV first and foremost. The differnces were many and great from Ifurita having a brain in the OAV as opposed to the California mall rat version in the TV to missing groups and people (namely the Shadow Tride and Fatora {her I could live without mind you, what a b!tch}) The two series are both good in their own right, and they both have their flaws as well, as will any series, but if you can only get one get the OAVs, you'll be a lot happier with your choice.

Tenchi Muyo

OAV 9

Movie 1 (TMIL) 9

Movie 2 (DOD) 8.5

Movie 3 (TF) 8.75

After reading what I had seen on the net about both the Tenchi series (OAV and TV) and having read a lot about the El-Hazard OAVs while looking for things on the TV I decided to go with the OAVs this time around. And as you can now see from my review there I may not get the Tenchi TV. One thing I didn't care for much was the way that characters voices seemed to have changed in the Dubs after a character's first episode. The first movie currently holds the crown as my favorite movie. My only real complaint about it is that if you hadn't seen some of the series first some of the humor would go right past you. The second movie was good but not as good as the first or the third for that matter. It did seem that a new animation crew did the work on Tenchi Forever (3) but wheter a new team or the original working with a new style the artwork was some of the best. In the end the OAV's ended on a far too open note, hencce the drop form 9.25 to 9.

Magic Knight Rayearth

Rating (Temp) 7.75

So far a promising sereis from my standpoint, altough I have a few minor complaints. The biggest problem I have is that Super-Deforms are a bit overdone to my taste, but as long as they don't use them for too many fights (not in any fights at all would best) I can live with it.

Project A-ko

OAV Rating 7.75

Vs. Rating N/A

Prior to owning these tapes I had only seen the first film on Sci-Fi channel. After reciving the other three as X-mas gifts I was slightly diapointed to find that it seems as if the first was all that was planned. This is evident in the fact that almost no characters have the same voice anymore (in the Dub anyway). Also the animation quality and humor levels seem to be lower in the last three films.

Ah!/Oh! My Goddess

OAV Rating S 9.5 D 7.75

Movie Rating S 9.5 D 8

DVD Rating OAV 3.5 Movie 4

Yes folks, I like Subtitled anime (I know to some of you this is like a sinner seeing the light) Actually, I started with the manga, but since it was kind of difficult to figure out the order of the books my collection is "scattered". (Something like books 1,2,4,5, and 9)Anyway, I like the angle this series takes on relationships. The sub scores a lot higher because I have now seen just how much things get butchered in translation. Keiichi's wish was changed in such a way that his surprise at what he got didn't make any sense. (If you've seen the series, or read the books, you should have a good idea what I mean) Otherwise, with the exception of Otaki, I just didn't agree with the dubbed's voice actor's (K-1's in particular) Anyway if you like romantic comedies, this is agood choice.

As for the movie, just about everything was perfect, altough, having not read volume 11 of the manga yet, I got cionfused with Chihiro, who looks kinda like Megumi (minor complaint, I know) The voices for the dub were better this time around, since Pioneer did the movie nad the Mini-Goddesses while Animego did the OAVs (if anyone know why, I'd love to know)

The DVD's have excellent video and audio qualities. The image galleries found on both discs were nice, but I feel that music video bit on the second OAV DVD could've been better. The movie contains the first epsiode of Mini-Goddess, which is, bizare to say the least. My little sisters enjoyed that part dubbed though, they must've watch it a good 5-6 times before it drove everyone else insane.) The features are nice, but more can be done with DVDs.

Ghost in the Shell

Rating 8.75

This is an excellent film but loses points beacuase it can be a little difficult to follow. Defenatly a movie to watch after the young 'uns are asleep, with such lines as ("It won't do any good takin' me in, I ain't talking to any g&d d@%# cops!" "Talk, and what're you gonna talk about, you don't even know your own name you stupid d!ckhead!") If the language doesn't set the age limit the violence and nudity should. A great film but not for the young.
