Be Concerned- Act!
In 1986, the Omnibus Budget Act was passed. Because of it, all doctors, nurses, and other medical employees under Title 38 who worked part-time prior to its passage were penalized when the retired because pensions were prorated on our part-time service and we were not grandfathered. However, Title 5 employees were grandfathered. Medical employees were discriminated against and continue to be for the past 16 years.
Also, during that time, many of us that were affected were women and because of the Government Pension Offset (GPO, we received a double whammy when we learned that we could not receive our husbands' Social Security. Many of us were widowed, divorced, and single. We were too old to recoup our damages by staying on the job.
I would hope that there are concerned nurses in NARFE who would contact me so that we could appeal to our congressional representative to correct this injustice by getting the law amended. Now is the time to act!
