Gendo Ikari: Being a Commander, Gendo is very experienced, secrative, and always achieves results and is able to stay calm, even in dire situations. As a father, though, he is cold, heartless, and even cruel, Gendo has never been there for his son, Shinji, and hasn't really made any attempts to get to know him better, despite that he does so for Rei. He seems to be almost dissapointed with Shinji, and sees nothing wrong with treating his son as a complete stranger who he may occasionally have a use for. Considering this, it's no wonder that Shinji ran away after his mother, Yui Ikari, died. Gendo met Yui during his University years, but it's been assumed that Gendo's main reason for marrying her was so that he could get closer to her work and the organization she worked for, and that he had no real interest in raising a family.
While Gendo does work for NERV, he doesn't share the same goals laid down by the UN committee, a cover in fact for SEELE, the backbone of NERV, who seem determined to carry out the human intrumentality project; the next step in human evolution. The main goal of the human instrumentality project is to create a single perfect entity by the merging of a human souls. In short, to instigate a third impact. All Gendo is really concerned with is carrying out the last wish of his deceased wife; to prevent a possible third impact created by the Angels.

Misato Katsuragi: Misato is an energetic, determined, and strong-willed individual that's not afraid to take charge of a bad situation, that is, when she's not busy getting drunk. Misato decided to join NERV after the death of her father, who died savng her life during the second impact on the Katsuragi expedition in Antarctica, intending to exact revenge on the angels for her loss. She was soon given the rank of Captain, then Major, and is appointed as NERV's operations director with explicit control over Evas 00, 01, 02 in the absence of Commander Ikari or Fuyutsuki.
On top of working for NERV, she is also Shinji's voluntary guardian, although her attitude towords him is more like that of a big sister. Despite her sisterly arrroach and her various bad habits, Misato does go a long way to help Shinji overcome his problems, and in getting him to open up a bit. She is also Asuka's guardian.
Misato is also Kaji's old lover, and even used to live with him, but decided to break off the relationship once she realized how similar to her father he was. Despite this though, she still harbors great care for him, but it would be unlikely that she would say this in public, and it's not completly inconceivable that they may, at one point, become more than just good friends once more.

Ritsuko Akagi: Ritsuko is very secrative, and doesn't talk about herself or her family very often. It is known, though, that she didn't get along with her mother, Naoko Akagi, creator of the MAGI super computers use by NERV, at least not on a personal level. She works very closely with Commanders Ikari and Fuyutsuki and knows a great deal of the truths behind the myserties surrounding the second impact, Adam, and the arrival of the Angels.
She's also friends with Misato and Kaji, having known them both for a very long time. Although Ritsuko is fond of Kaji, the two are nothing more than good friends, she knows Kaji still cares for Misato. Ritsuko is still single mainly because she really doesn't know how to act around men. This is probably because she has spent most of her life alone, after her mother commited suicide in front of the MAGI many years ago, and without a father during her childhood. As a result, Ritsuko has spent her life emersed in her work, something which is very important to her.
