Nightingales came
with the post today
mysteriously encoded
in a compact disk
a joy,
they trill their way
through my study
evoking woodland
and dale.
A paian to life
from such a small
valiant
fighter of a bird.

A hundred and ninety seven
RAF bombers
roared over the woods in Surrey,
and the nightingale sang
and was recorded.
Eleven bombers failed to return
and the nightingale was still singing.
A fitting paian for heroes
down the centuries,
as paians go,
and as heroes go too.

I received my copy of the nightingale CD which I had ordered from the British Trust for Ornithology. They are trying to save the nightingales in Britain. The CD is lovely, with 19 recordings, some historical some contemporary.
