0. Are you a genius? I have found all information that was looking for. Thanks a lot.-- Orion
Ans: Hi Orion, Thanks for visiting my website! No, I am not a genius and also not the hardware engineer.  I am software Engineer. I just collected some information and kept it on the internet for everyone. I myself was looking for this info few years back. You know, this makes internet a real international-net. We must not only SEEK information but should also GIVE some information to the world freely. You might be knowing something extra which someone in the world don't know. Then go ahead and put that on the net. It can be anything. The subject can be almost anything. How to tame or train animals? How your cat behaves in different places? What specialty your school or college have? What education your university offers? What are the business, travels and tourism details in your city or country? etc etc etc etc etc. The information can be anything. Put it on the net for FREE and see what happens.  You will not feel bad that you were born, lived, used internet and will die just like that. Because, the information stays forever. Automatically you will become extra-ordinary just like you call me genius. I know I am not. -- Mahendra

1. Is it possible to go on the internet on another computer by a direct parallel connection thru Laplink Cable?
Ans: With DCC of Microsoft's Win9x it is not possible. But now there are some softwares available which can do that but at some price. DCC of Win9x is for transferring files on two Win9x computers and not for Networking. You need to use Network Cards and Microsoft Network can allow you to do so with very simple proxy server softwares like PPPShar Pro. Anyways the data transfer thru Laplink cable can easily be programmed for such reasons by any hardcore windows and network programmer. Let's wait for that for few more days.

2. What is the maximum speed of Serial Port, Parallel Port and Ethernet or Lan cards for data-transfer?
Ans: Serial port is very slow it may maximum have 115200 bits/sec which means 14400 bytes/sec on modern Pentium PCs as documented mine. Which may be higher on others systems. But our softwares do a lot of other things while transferring data which slows it down further and we get less speed than the documented. Its always recommended that you go for Laplink Cable for data-transfer which is still much slower than Network Cards but faster than serial ports.
Advanced, enhanced high-speed parallel ports, conforming to the IEEE 1284 standard, are used to provide communications with external devices such as tape back-up drives, ZIP drives, printers, parallel port SCSI adapters, external LAN adapters, scanners, video capture, and other PC peripherals. These advanced ports support bi-directional transfers to 2MB/sec. (Click to see source of this info) Nowadays on newer motherboards the serial ports are also giving nearly similar speed as parallel ports as tested by me recently with utility softwares like (BurnIN TEST Pro).
Network cards give you 10megabits/sec or more depending on software and card itself as there are latest cards which are 100Megabits/Sec.

Please see USB section for more information on USB data transfer. Click here for more info on USB.

3. Is it possible to have a multiplayer game with a Laplink cable then, or is it only possible by means of the null modem cable?
Ans: The Serial port and Parallel port both can have two-way traffic of data. So the programmers of games can program for both the ports for multiplayer games. But data transferred in most of the multiplayer null-modem cable is so low that speedwise it is not necessary to go for Parallel Port as the second serial port (COM2) is mostly free and LPT1 is mostly engaged by printer. So game-programmers have programmed the Serial port for playing Multiplayer Games. NOTE: There might be some games in the world which are made to be played on PARALLEL PORT or LAPLINK CABLES. And we don't need to do anything for playing through LAPLINK Cables as games are designed by game-designers for playing only through Serial port (Null-Modem).

4. Suppose we have two Win9x machines connected with DCC with LAPLINK cable and one of the machine is connected to Novell or another type of network drive with LAN card. Can I access network drive if we are connected to that Network Terminal of the network?
Ans: When one machine can access the Novell Network or other Network Drive, say F: drive, you must SHARE it to Microsoft Network by Share Option in properties and access on another Win9x machine in Network Neighborhood which is connected to first machine with our LAPLINK Cable we made for getting DCC of Win9x. For example

NETWORK <------>HOST Machine of DCC <=======>Guest machine of DCC

Note: In above example the first machine is connected to NETWORK and the Guest machine can access the NETWORK drive indirectly thru HOST machine. Share the Network drive visible in Windows Explorer on Host Machine to access it on Guest computer. Even NETWORK drive on GUEST machine can be accessed by HOST with same method.

5. The system can't find the serial mouse. While assembling the old machine with different items, I've connected the mouse to the 9 pin RS232 serial port. Both com 1 and 2 are present in bios and in windows with No conflicts. What's wrong? - Tomas Olsson (Sweden)
Ans: The pin-configuration of internal serial cables (the one that connects from the motherboard to the case) are different for different motherboards, which come in two types. One with straight pins as in old mobos like 286/386/486. And another is twisted style cable like in latest Pentiums. The MALE DB9 pin is connected to serial port on motherboard with 9 wired cable as given on section 10 of pinout page.

6. Which of the pins are NOT used in relation to a MS Serial Mouse, on the COM port side? I was trying to attach a old trackball of laptop to a PC. - Peitro Dankov
Ans: Though I don't know the exact pinouts of your Trackball as nothing you told me about your laptop, still I can help you in the pins which are used in Microsoft Serial Mouse. Which may help you to reduce time in trial and error method to use TrackBall on your PC. The mouse is connected with pin nos. 2, 3, 4, 7 and 20 on DB25 type of serial port and 3, 2, 7, 5 and 4 on DB9 serial port.
The used signals for mouse are -- TD, RD, RTS, SG, DTR.
The unused signals are -- CTS, DSR, DCD, Ring Indicator

7.  I have tried to connect two computers using a MALE- MALE cable (DB-25) through the printer ports and I  can't seem to get the two computers  connected..Am i supposed to hear something when they connect like normal modem connect? - Chung Eon Yang.
Ans: You need to use LAPLINK CABLE (db25 male to male) as described on my site to connect two computers on Parallel port.  Also you need to setup Direct Cable Connection software which comes with Win9x CD, which is installed thru ControlPanel + Add Programs + Windows Setup section.  There is no noise to be heard from computers as this is not modem link which is used thru telephone exchange.  The connection is silent and great.

8.  I also want to play a multiplayer game and i installed "parallel port on LPT1" under the modems of both computers.. I have to dial from one computer and wait for call from the other (since the parallel ports are under modems - they are one type of modem)  what number do i have to dial for one computer to make the other computer receive the call and connect??
Ans:  I don't know what made you believe you that Parallel ports are under modems, which is totally a wrong information.  Parallel ports are parallel 8bit interface between two devices and does not come under modem technique which is 1-bit serial connection.  It will be better if you use "SERIAL PORT NULL MODEM CABLE" which is most widely used for multiplayer games.  Every multiplayer game have connect options with HOST and CLIENT mode to connect in menus.  After connecting both the computers with serial cable on both the computers you must start game in one computer and set it up as HOST thru Multiplayer Menu in Game.  On another machine setup the game in CLIENT mode and the game starts automatically if everything goes right.  Also some games come with LAPLINK Parallel port cable support for multiplayer game which you have to confirm in the USER MANUAL of the game.  There are proper instructions in the every multiplayer game for how to connect two computers.

9Is it possible to connect two computers using USB ports ?
Ans:  NO! It is NOT possible to connect two computers thru USB ports DIRECTLY.  There are some proprietary Cables available in market in less than 60$ which have a built-in electronic circuit with a special software to be installed on both machines. In fact, I am using one such cable to transfer files from my laptop to desktop at high speed, at 12Mbytes to 16MBytes per second, that's great speed. WARNING: Do not make USB cable on your own as USB ports do have 5volt DC current as output which can damage both motherboards.

10Is there any pinout for SERIAL to PARALLEL port or PARALLEL to SERIAL ports? (Really Silly Question)
Ans:  There is NO "direct" conversion or pinout to get serial port via parallel port or vice versa.  Of course there are some proprietary cables with special electronic circuits (and device driver softwares) which converts your parallel ports to serial type of connection and the things which are made to connect to serial ports (like modem or serial printers) can be connected "indirectly" to parallel ports.  But these are costly cables and mostly used by LAPTOP users.

11.  I am interested about your cool method of hiding the code and restricting mouse right click in your site. Can I do the same thing? Please tell me the secret?
Ans:  If you are aware with the standard HTML frameset command feature...
Step 1. First create a framecode on first html (mostly index.html) with two horizontal frames a top one with 100% space and bottom frame with 0% space. Top frame will load any HTML (say maincode.html) document. No need to mention any html page for bottom frame.
Step 2. Now in maincode.html file add (first copy-paste in notepad and then in your HTML page) following script code as it is inside <head> ???? </head> section which will disable right click button of your mouse.
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
var message="Right click is disabled! I have hidden the code! Contact me if want to use this method!"
function click(e) {
if (document.all) { if (event.button == 2) {alert(message);return false;}}
if (document.layers) {if (e.which == 3) {alert(message);return false;}}}
if (document.layers) {document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);}
document.onmousedown=click;
// -->
</script>

Done. Now the actual sourcecode of maincode.html is hidden and cannot be EASILY extracted. People can see only the source code of index.html which is not the real code of the page. Real page is maincode.html which is hidden inside the frame and framcode feature is disabled by this simple javascript. Hope you got it.  Remember this is not the complete foolproof method, experts can find the code anyways but will slowdown them

12. Unfortunately, there is no info on the wire color and to which pin! Can you advise me as to how to get this info?
Ans:  Sorry to inform you that yours is one of the most common question asked without studying the webpage carefully. There is no need of exact color codes for building the Parallel port or Serial port cable as you can assign your own set of pin number to color of the wire inside the cable. It is said that the color codes are compulsory with RJ45 network cable but its still can be done without exact color set when you solder wires to pins with correct numbers. I mean if your pin2 is going on pin 15 then use any one color at both sides (say red goes from 2 to 15).

13. Is it possible to connect two modems without going through the phoneline? if yes, can you show me how?
Ans:  This is not possible directly as both modems are conencted to Telephone Exchange for VOICE transfer! But if you have Intercom unit or also called EPABX system you can still connect them. The best idea would be to build null modem cable for more faster data transfer without modems.

14. How do I exactly transfer files in computer without windows (in DOS mode) with laplink cable?  My machine do not have Win95.
Ans:  If you connect both machines with Laplink cable and boot both with INTERSVR.EXE and INTERLNK.EXE in config.sys file. You can get extra drive in both computers and copy files from one computer to another even the computers do not have operating systems.  This is best method to copy files from LAPTOPS to DESKTOPS and vice versa.

The first machine should be booted with a bootable floppy with config.sys file which must have a line as follows.  The first floppy must also have a file called INTERSVR.EXE in root.

        DEVICE=INTERSVR.EXE

The second machine should be booted with another bootable floppy with config.sys file which must have a line as follows.  The second floppy must also have a file called INTERLNK.EXE in root.

        DEVICE=INTERLNK.EXE

The INTERSVR.EXE and INTERLNK.EXE are available in DOS 6.22. Click here to get these files.

17. What is the color convention for cables in India? What are various types cables used by BSNL for providing phone connections/ISDN/Leased lines etc? What is the pair hierarchy ? How they decide that this is the first pair & this is the next?

Ans: There is no specific color combination of network cable wires for any country. If BSNL techies are using any different color codes for their own convenience then I can't help it. By saying mate color they MIGHT mean the paired wire for a color used for specific transmission. Can't help u much here. You can make out your own combination also as per your requirements. Now how can I know color codes of 20 to 80 pair cables used by either BSNL or VSNL or MTNL or HATWAY or DISHNET DSL ????????? They are all using such cables with their own rules and decisions.

Also for the color code combination its individual persons wish how he/she want the color pairs to use, hence there is no color hierarchy for color pairs. The only important thing for them would be the gauge (width/strength/quality) of required wire depending on length of wire to be used from there service base to the customer place. Even in some cases they use whatever available colored wires when original colored wires are damaged at customer side.

18. Why these web-pages and website are so badly designed? -Pat
Ans. hi Pat, Thanks for compliment and also for the suggestion for the design thing. You see I am too busy man in my profession of web-designing itself (see clients list at www.indiacam.net ) and can design very high-class professional designs. But this site is just for information. Though I am so busy I try to find time to answer tremendous number of queries everyday (free-of-charge). And also I try to add content whenever there is new information I find to put. My concentration for this pinout web-site is completely to add information. Look, if I start messing-up with design thing, then I cannot give more time to queries and information. So I avoid such unwanted responsibility like design thing on this site because I am interested (right now) in putting more and more information in sweet and light manner.

I can design my site to win best designed site award even now with macromedia flash, but that will not serve my purpose and yours too. I am web-designer too, see homepage of this site. This site is more appreciated by many giants as being a great "white-page" site for all students and tech-graduates who access it from their slow internet machines of their universities and colleges, therefore I did not wanted to design this site with unwanted pictures and graphics and make site more slower. I even tried to avoid IMAGE BANNER of my own web-services and had put TEXT-ADVT-BANNER (see above the question). My pinout site still can win best free and fast information website right now, because it gets downloaded faster (did you notice that?). It have quantity and quality but not the good label (who cares?). Hope you understand my good intentions.

19. What is not possible to connect directly? - Myself
Ans.
There are many things in this cable technology which are technically no possible to connect w. Following in the list

From this port on COMP To this port on DEVICE Connecting Directly Connecting In-directly Reason
USB Port Serial Port OR Parallel port Device
(e.g. serial or parallel port printer)
NOT POSSIBLE YES:
Cables with Electronic Circuits and Software available in the market at around $50
This type of connection is not possible directly because of the difference in technical features and fundamentals.

But there are some USB units which are available with small convertor electronic circuit and a software driver with which we can connect SERIAL/PARALLEL devices to USB port on Computer.

Serial Port
(also called COM1 or COM2)
USB devices NOT POSSIBLE NOT POSSIBLE:
Technology Difference
This is never possible as SERIAL port on Computer does not match with the technology and speed of USB and even the convertor electronic unit is also not applicable for this kind of data-transfer or devices.

20. Great page, but there is no connector called a "DB9". The "B" defines the size of the shell. "B" is the shell used for RS-232. The correct name for a 9 pin D subminiature connector is "DE-9" - From: Steve
Ans.
Steve, Thanks for correction effort you did for the page. Of course there are very few people who notice it, but yes, you are not the first person to inform since December 1997 when this very old site was first launched by me. And yes, this is year 2004.

For your information, I have used the names and concepts which are very common in practical world. I do not want to confuse the common users and end users with the technical and scientific names of the simple things they see and use everyday. Definitely the DB9 is best name for RS232, because DB9 tells them that the connector contains 9 pins and hence DB25 comes with 25 pins. In fact, there is no other reason, why this webpage is so famous and useful. Most of my visitors are technical university students and they keep asking really intelligent questions than you, in my at least 25 emails received per day.

Wise Man's Advice (That's me): Instead of advising  others with unnecessary things, create some website with free information whatever you know extra and do some solid contribution to this wonderful new world called internet. The information can be anything from your scary night-stay experience in rural fort behind your native place or a professional skill you mastered in like playing guitar. Hope you understand what to do for internet now.

In simple words, don't try to teach me, that there is no connector called "DB9", I feel pity on your knowledge. If you don't know the subject, take information at your own risk from here if you want, else go away and never come back to this site. I never asked you to correct any information on this site. Hundreds of important corrections are already made which are advised by my other intelligent visitors, and I am thankful for them.

I know I am more egoistic person and I am proud of it. Do you know why, because through this ego I keep telling people to do something for internet like I did. To make this wonderful new world more free of information and help. --- Mahendra Chavan
