Normally, unlike other multiple skills listed as one, the Perform skill allows one to take a new type of performance with every additional rank in the skill, and to get the bonus from all ranks with all known performance types.
That will still be one option allowed, but for many Drakaran characters, there is a desire to learn fewer types of performances but at a higher level of skill. Therefore, I have devised a rule which allows a character with Perform skill to specialize, diversify, or do both, as the character chooses. Note that with no Bards to muddy up the waters, I can take a little more leeway with this skill without upsetting game balance much. ;)
The rule will be this -- whenever a new rank of Perform is gained, the character may either select one new type of performance or add a +1 (stackable) circumstance bonus to an already known type of performance, the circumstance being extensive study and practice of that type of performance. When using the skill, the character uses all his ranks in Perform, plus any circumstance bonus appropriate to the type of performance.
For example, Koziko has 6 ranks in Perform. Under the regular rules, she would have to list 6 different types of performance, which can get difficult unless you just start taking a variety of differently named (but essentially the same type) of musical instrument, say. Under the new rule, however, she might list her Perform skill thus:
Perform (Poetry (+2), Tea Ceremony, Samisen (+1)). (She has selected Poetry 3 times, Samisen twice and Tea Ceremony once.)
When performing a Tea Ceremony, Koziko will just use her normal 6 ranks in Perform, but when playing the Samisen she gets an additional +1 circumstance bonus, and when using Poetry she has a +2 circumstance bonus. She only has 3 different types of performances that she has learned, but she has worked to become more skilled in a couple of them.
Meanwhile, Goryu the Mad also has 6 ranks in Perform, but they are all concentrated on Storytelling, and so lists his skill as Perform (Storytelling (+5)). Goryu doesn't have a clue about other types of performances, but when telling his stories, he adds his 6 ranks and also gets a +5 circumstance bonus for having focused so totally on the storyteller's art. His stories keep audiences rapt with attention, and he makes a decent living at it...he is called the Mad because of the way he changes his voice and partially acts out the parts of various characters in his stories, almost bringing them to life in front of his audience... (Rumor has it that Goryu is also a ninja, but of course ninja don't really exist!)
The Skill Focus feat still works normally, i.e. Skill Focus (Perform) counts as two extra ranks in the skill, but doesn't add any new performance types or bonuses.
