SESSION 29: Into the Cave

(Nov. 14, 2004) Chronicler: Isaku

Month 10, Day 28, Year 1562 –

Our party headed towards the cave we think may lead to Deep Dark, after picking up supplies back in town. Noku stayed in town on some business of his own. We set up camp near the cave entrance for the night.

Month 10, Day 29 –

We entered the cave, carrying various sources of light for those who don’t have dark vision. We walked along for about 5 miles, and reached an intersection with another passage that seems to have crude steps. There weren’t many tracks overall, but there seemed to be slightly more traffic on the passage to the right. We took that path to the right, and seemed be heading downward.

Around dinner time, we found another side passage that didn’t look too significant. Til’k checked out the side and main passage before we camped out for the night.

Month 10, Day 30 –

We continued down the main passage, and noted that charging/running wouldn’t be that easy in this terrain. After about 5 hours, we found ogre tracks in another large passage to the right, and decided to follow them. Eventually the passage opened up to an area with an underground stream.

Til’k soon encountered an ogre after turning around a corner, and battle ensued with 4 ogre fighters, 1 ogre shaman, 1 ogre sorcerer, 1 water troll and 1 water goblin. The ogres cast Ice Storm and Fog Cloud against us, but Ashiko blinded several of them with a Holy Smite.

We eventually defeated the 4 fighting ogres and the water troll. The ogre shaman disappeared somehow, but not exactly by Teleport. The ogre sorcerer did escape by Teleport, and the water goblin simply swam upstream. Til’k and Hatori attempted to swim after the water goblin, but couldn’t catch him. Hatori cast Polymorph Self to turn into a water troll, then swam ahead and found an underwater chamber with a pile of treasure. It looked like someone hurriedly grabbed some of the treasure, but couldn’t take all of it.

Sadly, Mirumoto Kabuto did not survive the battle, but he fought bravely and died with honor while protecting Hatori, who had fallen in battle.

We collected the treasure that Hatori found, for later distribution. There were various magical weapons and shields, and some other interesting items.

We moved further up the side corrider we were in, and Hatori did some divinations that determined that we would be reasonably safe there for the night. Hatori also identified some of the treasure:

Horn of Goodness/Evil – creates Magic Circle of Good/Evil based on owner’s alignment.
Ring of Climbing
Cloak of Resistance +2
Armor +3
Amulet of Mighty Fists +1 (like Mighty Ki)
Sandals of Striding & Springing – adjust to owner’s size.
Scimitar +2, Keen
Scimitar +1, Keen
Chain Shirt +2, Agility +4
Nodache +1, Keen
2 Shield +2
2 Chain Shirt +2

After casting the usual prep spells and setting up the watch order, we spread out our bedrolls and settled down for the night.

Month 11, Day 1 –

Isaku cast Speak With Dead to talk to Kabuto’s corpse, and confirmed that we would return his body and belongings to the Dragon lands. Kabuto indicated that he felt he had died honorably and had no desire to be raised from the dead.

Ashiko cast Teleport on herself and Hatori to bring Mirumoto Kabuto back to the Dragon lands. Hatori related the story of our battle with the ogres, and how Kabuto died with honor and sacrificed himself to save Hatori. Kabuto’s family held a small funeral in his honor, which Ashiko and Hatori attended.
