VENTURA COUNTY COUNCIL

BOY SCOUTS of AMERICA

APPROVED CLIMBING/RAPPELLING INSTRUCTORS

Starting January 1, 2000, the Boy Scouts of America have instituted new rules for Climbing and Rappelling. There is a new Climb On Safely program which leaders are to have before taking their troop, team, crew or post on this type of activity. Additionally there is a requirement that the primary leader/instructor be authorized by the Council after being okayed by a person who has attended BSA National Camp School. At this time the Council is using the Council High Adventure Team as the clearinghouse for these activities.

This new program is being offered for the first time at Camp School this summer; May 27-June 2, at Peaceful Valley Camp in Elbert, Colorado, June 3-9 at Camp Brinkley in Snohomish, Washington, and June 10-16 at Lost Valley Scout Reservation in Warner Springs, California. It is anticipated that either session will cost approximately $320 plus transportation. If anyone is interested in attending one of these Camp Schools they should contact Bill Belcher at the Scout Service Center, (805) 482-8938.

At the present time the Council High Adventure Team has authorized the following persons to be leadership/instructors on climbing and rappelling activities. They are Mel Krone, Rod Myers, Kevin Proctor, Dave Crockett, and Dale Synnes. One of these persons name must appear on our Tour Permit to receive approval.

You may contact these instructors by e-mail or contact the Council Office for their phone #.

Please check with these instructors to see if they are available for your outing and gear that the instructor has for use at the outing.

Remember, that you must still have at least 1 adult leader that has completed the Climb On Safely Course & First Aid requirements on your climbing outing and at least 1 adult leader for every 10 youth.
