Many churches view evangelism as a one-time event when a person
is challenged to make a decision. But we must recognise that evangelism
is a process
A person's faith grows from a simple recognition of a spiritual
need until it reaches the point where they are ready to trust in
Christ. A local church should organise its evangelism strategy so
that it meets people who are at different points in the evangelistic
process. Don't just think about what will bring people to a decision.
Step back and ask first what will make them aware that they have
deep inner needs that they cannot meet. Ask what will create an
interest in Christ. Ask what will persuade them that Christianity's
truth claims are valid. Ask, "If I was a non-churched non-Christian,
what kind of church even would I be interested in going to?"
Use a longer-term evangelistic approach like Christianity Explained,
Alpha, or LifeWorks.
In the end, of course, don't neglect to challenge them to make
a decision about Christ!
