Right on schedule, the new little Chevy made its bow in mid-1970. Called the Vega 2300, its name came from a bright star in northern skies and from the engine's approximate displacement in cubic centimeters. And it was a winner right from the beginning. Remembering the ill-fated Corvair, a lot of people expected something revolutionary and technically radical. At first glance they were disappointed, because the Vega had a front-mounted water-cooled inline engine, a normal driveshaft and a convetional rigid rear axle- all rather like an average American car. But under its smooth skin, the Vega had a bundle of surprises.
