Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright.
~ The West Wing: Sam Seaborn, 20 Hours in America, Part II ~
The X Files is truly unparalleled in the complication of the storyline. In every episode (to some extent) there are four different mythologies at work which are wrapped up into one BIG old mythology. Each morality play is clear, and yet shows the true grayness of the world, that there is always a line we walk and that line is moveable by the minute. What are the choices we make and how is it that they steer our direction on any given day? What is our inevitable price? Do we betray everything for the soul mate of our hopes and dreams even knowing that the betrayal would end up eventually destroying our relationship with the soul mate or do we plug on, knowing to follow our heart and our instincts, even when all seems truly lost? Do we risk our hearts for love, or remain closed behind the walls we put up, all for the justifications of safety? What passions drive us and are those passions allowed to change over time? These, and so many more questions run through my brain whenever I turn on any ep of the X Files - stand alone ep or not. It's a show that stands the test of time, no matter the time it was filmed in. It demands truth from the viewers, and an ability to think harder while watching than most other shows on TV. Nothing is just handed to the viewer and the viewer must, must, must work as hard as the investigators to find out what that truth is and if it's really out there.
