The Shadow

A/N - This is told through Bulma’s point of view. You can guess who the Shadow is. I wrote this in a different style than I usually do. I hope everyone likes it.

The wind is singing to me through the window

Be careful, the Shadow walks tonight.

Rain drips lazily down the glass.

I hug my blanket closer and watch the water rivulets play tag as they race.

The Shadow walks tonight.

The wind is still singing to me. My mother told me once of the Shadow that roams in the rain, waiting to find the one that will be his for eternity. She said that he visits the windows that face the north wind and waits for his maiden.

I don’t believe in the Shadow anymore. I’m too old to be afraid of childish tales.

The Shadow walks tonight.

They say just his eyes are powerful enough to sway even the strongest hearts. All of a sudden I shiver and turn away from the window to lie back on my pillow, listening to the soothing rain. The wind howls again.

The Shadow walks tonight!

And suddenly it is quiet, though the rain still falls steadily. It is a different silence. One that tugs at my stomach and makes me sit up again to gaze out in the window.

The Shadow walks…

My heart flutters as I stare into a pair of dark eyes…

He is beautiful, not the ugly monster that haunts most stories. I feel an urge to touch him and I find the cool glass under my fingers. What is this feeling?

His dark eyes are still locked onto mine, the rest of his features are softened by the rain although he seems dry.

The Shadow…

He does not move at all while I look at him. The wind is still singing, but the sound is fuzzy and I can’t hear it all. I am too hypnotized by him. He seems to smile a bit, but not very noticeably. My heart jumps again.

…will steal your heart away

Somehow the glass between us disappears and he is sitting on my bed next to me. Our eyes have not unlocked. He reaches up and touches my forehead with his fingers, and whispers. But I cannot hear him. Desperate to know what he is whispering, I lean forward against his push. My eyes close on their own and I fall back on my pillow.

… and take you to a place far from home.

It’s too late once you stare into his eyes.

I feel him next to me, warm and comfortable. It feels right.

Strangely I am unafraid.

His arms wrap around my waist and I know that it is alright. Hot breath tickles my ear and I realize that he is whispering again. This time I can hear him.

You’ve been taken away…

Be careful, the Shadow walks tonight.

The Shadow walks in the rain tonight.

The Shadow will steal your heart away…

… and take you to a place far from home.

It’s too late once you stare into his eyes.

You’ve been taken away…
