Injectors and Glow Plugs | |||||||||||
I decided to replace my glow plugs and check/clean my injectors today. My TDI has 103,000 total miles and 20,000 veggie miles. I did most of the last 20,000 miles without the aid of injector cleaners. Up to this point I have not experienced any problems indicative of injector trouble, but as the saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." As you can see from the pics, the injectors had a layer of carbon deposit on them. I soaked them in Greased Lightning fuel system treatment and scraped the carbon off as best I could. You can see the difference between the uncleaned injector nozzle and the cleaned one (on the left). As soon as the injectors were out, I cleaned each injector casing with cotten swabs dipped in greased lightening. I put small rags into the holes to prevent debris from entering the head. The glow-plugs are now five years old and needed to be replaced, because it was taking about 3 seconds of rotating before the engine would fire. You can see some carbon deposit on the glow plug next to a new one. |
