Who were the Druids? The Druids are a mysterious people that lived in Gaul (Britain, Ireland, Scotland) many centuries ago. Traces of the Druids have been found from Scotland down to France and Italy. The word "Druid" The Druids were the priests of the ancient Celts. Druids were teachers. They believed in knowledge is power. There is little known of these people. Only a few rites of the Druids are known to this day. Being an intelligent people, they were one of the first to record history with writing. The Druidic alphabet is known as Ogham (pronounced Owam). Throughout history and legends, the most famous of Druids is Taliesin, also known as Merlyn. Taliesin is known as the "Father of Druids." This title fits him perfectly for he is the wisest of the Druids. Taliesin is a poet, Druid, Bard, and minstrel. He was well-trained in writing, poetry, wisdom, music, knowledge and magick. Taliesin was said to have been the father of King Arthur. Now, of course we all know that there are quite a few different stories to the legend of Camelot. So, I'm not real sure if Taliesin is really Arthur's father or not. Druidic teachings are pretty much summed up into these three things: worship the Gods, do no evil, be strong and courageous. Druids believe in reincarnation, or (in Druidic terms) one must pass through many incarnations in Abred--the Circle of Necessity; then came Gwynedd--the Circle of Blessedness. Abred is your earthly life. Once all lessons are learned, your soul does not return, but goes on to a better place. Some call this place "Tir na Nog". Dryads, female Druids, lived in sacred groves. Women were of high social standing in the Celtic Social Ladder. This being that they were thought to be Goddesses in their own respect. They are the creators of life. Some think that perhaps the Dryads were here before the Druids because of the very ancient Goddess-religions. |
