Question 1: Search for the same topic at 5 different search sites.

authoring video freeware shareware (Looking for a Video Editor for Free Evaluation.)
Best results and why:

Metacrawler had the best results and was very fast. Dogpile does just what you would expect
from the name (lol). I think I will see what results I will get using some advance search techniques
with Dogpile.

Topic =  authoring video freeware shareware
Search Engine Sites Found Categories Opinion
Yahoo 151 3 Focus seemed to be on last words in line.
Hotbot 1020 5 Provides a Drill- Down type of response. Came closer than Yahoo to finding what I wanted.
Infoseek 5,364,186 10 Case sensitive. "Highlights" words found in articles. Found something that may be the solution. Can choose where to look (ftp sites, bbs, newsgroups, etc. to narrow search)
Dogpile 827,342 docs 11 S E Can choose where to look
Metacrawler 31 - Fastest search engine. Set it to find files containing all the words. Gave me what I was looking for in the first page (I asked for 20 per page).

AND , NOT 4245690 Same as above Same Results
OR 4298030 Increased a bit AltaVista is a Monster!
NEAR 6524720 Increased more? More hits came as a surprise.
" " 1169 Much more reasonable AltaVista found none this time! Same for Direct Hit, whoops! Yahoo, Looksmart and Lycos had the only hits.
Blend of the above with additional words 4908890 Direct Hit did not show the one I had but did show more results Found another source. It was linked to  commercial trial versions but I may try it out.
Shareware not freeware was one of the hits (LOL)

Conclusion:
I will probably use search engines in the following order:
Direct Hit, MegaCrawler,  Dogpile.

Question 6: Library Search Engines

**Search the LCC Library Online Catalog (StarFish) for a book in
a subject area of interest to you. Select and copy the record
giving name, location, call number and status of the book or
periodical into your answer to this exercise. You can try the new
WWW interface to the StarFish.
http://198.109.144.17/screens/opacmenu.html

Subject: video editor for internet pages

Author                  Bergman, Robert E.
Title:                  Managing interactive video/multimedia projects / Robert E. Bergman & Thomas V. Moore.
LOCATION:          TLC 4TH FLOOR
CALL NUMBER:   LB 1028.75 .B47 1990     Status:   AVAILABLE

If you are a current LCC student, you can apply for the Michicard program,
which lets you check out books from a number of other participating libraries in
the program. Go to LCC's Library WWW site and look over the
Information on Michicard
**What do you need to do if you want to participate and check
books out from other libraries in Michigan?

· Using Other Libraries Available to Lcc Students
1. Requirements - Card Issuance:
· The local library issuing a MichiCard should obtain the following information, if not already listed in the file of borrowers:
· Borrower's name, address, zip code and phone number or information that
adheres to local library policy.
· Borrower's driver's license, Michigan I.D. card or other proper identification.
MichiCard Provisions:
2. Michcard Provision
· A Voluntary program.
· All rules, policies and restrictions normally imposed by the local library will
apply to persons presenting the MichiCard.
· The library will issue the MichiCard card or affix the MichiCard sticker to the individual library cards held by borrowers in good standing who are residents living in the library's legally established service area or attending school in that service area. The library "service areas" are defined as the institution's legally
        established service area.
· Libraries MAY NOT issue a MichiCard or sticker to any nonresident who does
not live in their service area or provide financial support for the library.
· MichiCard users must register at each library that they use. An adult parent or guardian should sign for children under age 18 (or the library will follow its own local policies for such cases).
· Assign a specific future expiration date, if appropriate.
· Add all appropriate data to the MichiCard, or affix the MichiCard sticker to the local library card.

Try searching for your topic at one of the other Michicard libraries. The MSU
Library (using the Webz service) or the Library of Michigan
http://www.libofmich.lib.mi.us/
are probably easiest.

**What library catalog did you search? Library of Michigan
http://opac.libofmich.lib.mi.us/screens/opacmenu.html  (direct link to search).
You should have searched for the same topic as you used at the LCC library.
How did your results compare with want you found at the LCC library?

Author      Lemay, Laura.
Title:         Teach yourself Web publishing with HTML 3.0 in a week / Laura Lemay..
LOCATION:          Main 3 S
CALL NUMBER:  QA 76.76 .H94 L45 1996      Status:    DUE 08-11-99

After you find the information you need at the LCC
library, search for the same topic at one of the larger online
bookstores. Many people are using the bigger online
bookstores to find out about new books that exist and to
learn more about what others have to say about them. Two
the most popular (who both give many discounts) are:

Amazon http://www.amazon.com or

Barnes and Noble at http://www.barnesandnoble.com.

**How did your results compare to what you found at the
libraries? Explain specifically if you found as many books and if
you thought they would be more more or less useful for you
than the ones from the LCC library.

More of them, more useful and of course recent. Not to mention $$$$.

Question 8: Finding & Meeting People on the Internet

21 July 1999
Used http://people.yahoo.com/

To find myself I had to use my first initial and last name.

Found 7 listings for the name of an old friend from High School days who lives in California last I knew. Sent short letter telling about working on a Music site and invited him to contribute ( we were fellow folk singers back in the early 70's) and received reply from one who was not him. Am hopeful and will continue to search.

Also registered and left messages on bulletin board with Classmates http://www.classmates.com/
I went to 3 High Schools over four years so have different memories from each as I matured (lol).

Sent letter to another classmate who has moved back to area. We are going to try to get together before the summer ends. His son is now in Fourth grade. Last I saw him he was 3 years old.
