Web Wiz Forums Documentation
Installing Web Wiz Forums on Free Hosting Accounts
Return to the main menu

  1. Check with your web host that your web space is running on Windows NT4, 2000, 2003 operating system, with IIS 4+ and is ASP enabled. Web Wiz Forums will NOT run on a Unix/Linux web server! Please read 'Forum Requirements' for a full list of server requirements for this software.
  2. Check with your web hosts that you can use a DSN-less connection to an Access database on your web space and that you have sufficient permissions to write to this database. If your hosts require that you have the forum's Access database in a specially set up directory please see Moving the Location and/or Renaming the Forum Database.
  3. Unzip the Forum zip file onto your hard drive keeping the files and images in there original directories.
  4. Edit the common.asp file found in the main forum folder and change the following variable: -

    blnUseApplicationVariables = true

    To: -

    blnUseApplicationVariables = false

  5. Upload the files and images through FTP to your webspace, again keeping the files and images in their directories. With ASP you don't need to place the files in a CGI bin.
  6. Once all the files are uploaded point your web browser to the location on your web space where you uploaded the forum to.
  7. Now that your forum is uploaded and running see, Setting up and Administering the Discussion Forum, to find out how to set up forums and administer your forum. (Please see note at bottom for what features will NOT run on free hosting accounts)
  8. If you find that you are getting errors and pages not displaying please see Troubleshooting and Common Errors.
  9. To login into the forum the default admin username and password is: -
    • Username: - Administrator
    • Password: - letmein

Important Note For Free Hosting Accounts:-

Due to the way free web hosts setup sites some features of Web Wiz Forums can not be used and will need to be disabled from the admin area once Web Wiz Forums is setup including:-

  1. Make sure you have followed the instructions above and have disabled the 'blnUseApplicationVariables', found in the common.asp file otherwise your forum will NOT run!!!
  2. WYSIWYG (RTE) Post Editor - The adds that free web hosts inject into pages prevent this feature from running
  3. All email features - Free web hosts don't generally have email components installed and/or disabled with their free accounts
  4. Active Users List - Your site will be sharing server resources with other sites this prevents this feature from running correctly
  5. If you are using a free account from 1asphost, domaindlx, or Brinkster then the buttons for the post editor will not work as their add '100mb webspace etc.', is injected into a JavaScript file making the JavaScript within the file fail to run.
