Ill wind blows no good for research ship

The atmosphere on the bridge of the Marine and Atmospheric Science Research Ship "Columbus Iselin" was far from pure one night as the ship sailed off the Florida Coast.

For the Master of the 280grt vessel was suffering from a bout of flatulence.

And the resulting odors were said to have been so offensive that the Master and the watchkeeper had to evacuate the ‘relatively confined’ wheelhouse to seek fresh air on the bridge wings.

In the ensuing distraction, the 24yr old research ship – owned by the University of Miami – ran aground on a coral reef in the Florida Keys, some twenty miles east of Key West.

According to a report in the Australian Maritime Officer journal, the Master was so embarrassed by the incident that he immediately asked to be relieved of command and subsequently surrendered his license to the Coast Guard.

He initially told investigators that he had ‘blacked out’ for several minutes before the grounding, but later withdrew his statement. The full story emerged when lawyers were taking formal statements from crew members, but Coast Guard officialls diplomatically decided to blame the incident on negligence.

That'll do nicely, Captain

The Airliner was waiting to leave France for Gatwick when the Pilot made an emergency announcement. Could a passenger possibly lend him Two Tousand Pounds to pay Marseille Airports landing fee?

There was a stunned silence. Then a man stood up and offered his American Express Card. The airport authorities decided that would do nicely. And after the necessary formalities the airplane took off.

The volunteer was reimbursed by Air Zimbabwe at journey's end. The Boeing 707, flying Harare to London, had not intended to stop in Marseille. It did so only because of air traffic problems which made it fly lower, thus using more fuel. As none of the crew members had enough money to pay the landing fee, it was decided to ask the passengers for help
