History & Overview |
The Wiccan religion was based on views and traditions of England, Wales, Iteland and Scotland before the Christian vews became the popular belief. But its origens can be followed all the way back to the Paleolithic age when such things as Hunter and rain gods and a Fertility goddess were worshiped. It is a belief of Spirtuality reather then Christianity. The days of the Salen witch trials proved to push the practice into hiding in the US. When laws were passed in the early 1950's in England against Witchcraft mared it even more as the forbidden religion. There have been many misconceptions surounding Witches and Witchcraft itself thoughtout history and even today. For thousands of years witches were seen as hidious old hags that stolked out children and cast evil spells and hexes on those who crossed her path. This view stemed from Christian stories to covert thoses who still belived in the old views to the Christian views. These views invoked fear of the practice, a practice that was ment to mean, a wise healer. We all remember the tale of Hansel & Gretal of the evil witch that lived in the forest, that tried to fatten up the children to eat. We dress up our children as witches on hallaween to be ulgly, with a pointed hat, worts, straw hair and flys around on a broomstick. However the facts and the fiction have been confused over the years and it all tends to draw a pretty ulgly picture of something that is based on nature, love, undertanding and peace. The witches of today are into brewing up herbal remedies for natural healing and sented oils that promote tranquility instead of wicked brews and poisions. They are the manufactures of bath oils and insents, healing herb rubs and candles. Not evil postions. Witches do not worship the devil or cast evil spells. Satan is yet another product of Christian views and myths. The Wiccans do not have a belief in the incarnation of evil or demonic presents. Instead their belief system is surounded around a view that all living things are made up a stream of negative and positive energies which bring a balance of all that is living. Negative engeries create negitive reactions in nature and positive engeries create positive reactions in nature. Together there is a balance, sortof like negative and positive charges of a battery. And witches do not cast evil spells for one simple reason. They have a very strong belief in the Law of Return. Basicly what comes around goes around. If you cast evil on another that evil will return to you in fold. Instead they cast spells that invoke healing, love, peace, wisdon, Joy, or inspiration. And their brews herbal healers for such things as maybe the sniffles, a headache or stomach ache, sented bath oils or even shampoo. They belive that the spirts they worship being god or godess are in every living thing on the earth. They even believe that such things as the air and the rain are living as well. They are in the brease the russles your hair, a raindrop that falls on your cheek. A snow flake that you catch on your toungue and in a a blade of grass that is trampled under your foot. In a flower picked by a child and in a bird that sings you a sweet melody. |

Wiccans worshop all nature and learn from it's beauty. The moon and sun travel in cycles these are a sourse of celebration to a witch for they believe to be harmonious with nature is to have a harmonious life. They believe that the four elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth bring all of creation, with it the understanding of the unfolding of the entire universe. And yes there is room for the after life in the religion. They hold two standerd beliefs that are both widly excepted in the craft. One being the Ancestral Incarnation which is where the spirit of their ansestors are passed on threw generations of a family line. This being the more traditional view. The second being the Transmigration of Souls or souls passing from one person to another infanately to gain total knowlage of life. Witches also have a strong and unaverisal belief in freedom. That there is not just one way but many ways all leading to the same common point. There is no one leader of the religion instead it is broken down into small groups that is in charge of the leadership of it's self. Any person who seriously studies the craft can be a priest of priestess of the Wiccan religion. The laws and practices are of written word and this is followed by all groups. This is called the "Wiccan Rede." There also have been principlas set fourth byt the Council of American Witches called simply, "Principlas of Wiccan Belief"' created in the mid 1970's. This was created to help define modern Witchcraft. In short Spiritualty is the belief in a unconditional love of all life. To love and respect nature. It teasches that we all should have a unconditional love and respect for others. To respect the choices, views and rights of everyone. It's a belief in freedom, in peace, love and the understanding that we are not all the same. It's a belief that we are all free to make our own choices in life and responcible for our oun destiny. Life is what we make of if it, we cannot hold another perosn or a God responcible for things that happen in our lives. With a greater respect for nature, humanity and ourselves we can create a peace and joy in our oun lives. We are the masters of our oun destinys. With a greater love for life our world would be a better place, nature would not be distroyed, there would not be such things as predjuice or discrination. Abuse and violence would be unheard of words. Our lakes and oceans would not be safe from hospital waste and cemical polutants. Im sure we all could use a little more understanding and respect in our lives, we all need a little peace and surenty. A feeling of wellbeing in ourselves and in the world around us. It starts with understanding of our world and what makes it live. To respect it, to respect the power of nature and how it dose effect our lives. Much too often it is overlooked.A common view is held that nature is nature that is will always be there. But we are killing it a littel more everyday and at the same time killing ourselves and each other. |
