Forestry Simulation - Activity Sheet
Case Study: _________________ Lake

A wood products manufacturing company harvests large areas of Crown Land in _________________ county.  This company uses the wood to make easy assembly desks.  Individuals owning shoreline property on __________________  Lake have built cottages, so that they can escape from the city and enjoy the natural beauty of the area with their families.  Later in the fall, these cottagers are joined by hunters who use the forested area for recreational hunting purposes and ice fish on the lake.

As we have learned, the forest manager of the ____________________ Lake area must take several items into consideration when writing a forest management plan.  In this situation, he must take into consideration the company and its need for profits, the cottagers who pay land taxes and the hunters who moderate the animal populations.

Debate the following factors and decide if their impact would be positive/negative or neutral.

- a logging road is built to the shore of the lake (pick a point near your forested tract of land)
- the lakeshore is zoned to allow for more cottages to be built
- the company agrees to leave 50m of lakeshore forest uncut
- the sale of more cottages increases the tax revenue to the area
- the tree tops cut off by foresters provide extra food for deer(herbivores) in the winter
- logs are often found laying across the road to the cottages
- cottagers use the waste wood for their own heating
- local residents are hired to cut the trees
- logging activities cause increased noise pollution
- hunters have lodged complaints regarding messy slash in bush area
- jobs are lost when the company pulls out of the area
- company prosecutes trespassers who cross from the cottaged areas onto the forested land
- cottagers tolerate logging near their cottages
- logging machines damage roads and trees
- cottagers enjoy seeing wild deer
- children enjoy playing in the forested area and building forts
