Biography My experiences with sculpting, started when I was very young. I often made my own toys ( people, animals and monsters) always feeling I could do better. So over the years I did get more detail and feeling in the pieces. After finding Sculpey a clay that I could bake in our oven my toys became artwork. In high school I realized I could be a sculptor. The support of one special Social Studies teacher (Mary Lee Johnson), helped me be more serious about my work. Social issues became the subjects of a series of pieces. The great Masters DaVinci, Michelangleo, Rodan and Camile Cladel also confirmed that social issues have always been a subject of art. After high school I volunteered in local Galleries and met and worked with sculptors from the local area. Learning mold making and bronze casting. This lead me to work in J. A. & M. Foundry. And to meet more local artists. I was able to find a studio space in a warehouse full of artists and finding my true environment. For five years I did several commissions. My interest lead through many kinds of sculpture clay, wire, pottery and jewelry which all have an important connection to each other. While working in neighborhood co-op I meet a sculptor Peg Ritter who worked at the science museum, she suggested I come down and apply at the Paleo lab. I did and found another important use of my talents. Making casts, sculpting and painting missing bones of dinosaurs, prehistoric fish and crocodiles. It was and is a highlight of my experiences Which to working at the Historical Society where I learned more ways to be creative as a Fabricator for six years. After buying a home, landscaping and gardening surfaced as yet another form of sculpting. Over the years I find everything I do leads me back to sculpture. I’ve often read how the master’s favorite and best subjects are those closest to them> This is my goal also as I find that capturing not only the likeness but also the character of my subject. |
