On this page I will talk about things and issues I'm interested in. You will also find links to relevant pages. I hope you will enjoy this eclectic hotchpotch!
The environment: Man seems to have the strange idea that the planet on which he lives belongs to him and that he is free to make any changes he feels like. I strongly disagree with this attitude. We are here in passing and we should hope to leave it a better place. We have a duty to those who come after us to bequeath them a planet which can sustain both man and nature. The trick is finding the balance. I firmly believe that it is possible to find that balance - one in which man, animals and the natural properties of the earth can survive together in harmony. I believe that ultimately nature has the last word, we try to change her but she can only be manipulated so far before destroying the very culture that is trying to dominate her. We need to clean up our act. By that I mean that we have to find alternative ways of providing energy. If politicians invested more money into researching the elements that nature provides - the sun, daylight, the waves, the wind and the like - instead of pouring more and more money into nuclear power stations that will sooner or later explode in our faces, in more ways than one, alternative sources of energy could become viable. We need to find effective and safe ways of disposing of all the waste we generate. Many people are becoming increasingly aware of the need for recycling but governments need to give people an incentive. How many people throw batteries away with their normal rubbish because it is easier than finding a battery deposit, for example? There are many projects under way that aim to incorporate recycled material into the environment. I read, not all that long ago, that recycled glass has been used to make road surfaces. Companies that usefully recycle products could be given grants, or maybe tax exemption to encourage them. The possibilities are as infinite as our imaginations!! What right do we have, as a member of one species, to decide the fate of other spe cies. How can we be so arrogant? How can we justify killing animals for sport or for profit? Nature has developed a fine balance which, without interference from us, would work just fine. The thought of clones and genetically manipulated products frightens me. Anyone who is not concerned by it should read Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, written in ???? but suddenly very relevant again. What sort of "progress" is this? I could go on and on for pages... but, you'll be relieved to see that I won't! Here, instead are some links to pages designed by like-minded people to myself.
