Features

Use Internet Explorer as your means of FTP. Step one would be, to open Internet Explorer.

Go to the address bar (the place where you type in the site you want to go to), and type in ftp.tripod.com. Press Enter to go that site.

It's asking for a username, and password. What do I tell it? We'd hoped this one would be obvious, but maybe not. Enter your Tripod membername, and password. Do not enter your domain name, if you have one as part of your hosting with us. Only enter your membername. Your membername is the beginning of your Tripod URL. (http://membername.tripod.com) (NB bij hccnet: http://home.hccnet.nl/membername)

I'm in! What now?
You should see a view that looks a lot like the files you browser through on your computer. If it's the first time you're logging into the account, you should see a folder called cgi-bin, and an HTML file. The index.html file, is the "main" page people will see when they come to your website. So, if you're changing that, be sure your "main" page, is titled as index.html.

Now, the uploading part. Open an Explorer window, and locate the files on your computer that you want to display on your website (including your images). Highlight them. (You can upload as many as you want at once, or as many as your internet connection can handle). You can copy and paste those files right into the FTP window. That's it. The files are now in your Tripod webspace.

Anything important I should know?
In relation to FTPing the files to your webspace? Yes, here's a few things to keep in mind: Top

Your file names, and images need to be HTML compliant. That means no spaces within their names, and no non-alphanumeric characters.

You can't create subdirectories (folders) from FTP, that needs to be done from the File Manager within your Tripod account.

If you delete a file from your FTP site, it's your responsibility to put it back. You can't write into us, and ask us to "restore" it, or "put it back" for you. We don't regularly back up your files. That's why you're using FTP after all, you can use it to back up your website.

Back up? What do you mean?
Back up. You know, like a copy of the site on your computer. So, in case you delete some files accidentally from your webspace, you can put them back, and not have to create everything from scratch. That wouldn't be much fun, would it?

How do I do that?
Well, FTP works the same in both directions. We already went over how to upload the files via FTP. To back up your files, or download them, simply follow the steps in the reverse direction. Locate the files within your FTP window, highlight them. Copy and paste them onto your computer (in whatever folder you want to keep them in.) Top

My friend said I needed to get an FTP program, is that true?
Well, if you've got money to spend, and want an FTP program, go for it. Who are we to tell you that you can't buy one? By all means, if you want to use an FTP program, go for it. Here's a link to our our help section, regarding FTP Programs and access.

I've already got an FTP program. How do I set it up to work with Tripod?
Here's the info you'll need to use an FTP program:

Host name: ftp.tripod.com
User ID: Your Tripod member name
Password: Your Tripod password
Directory: Leave this field empty to FTP to your root directory (you can choose a subdirectory later if you wish) Top

Once you've got your web pages ready, you need some FTP software to upload them to Rootsweb. I'm using FileZilla filezilla, because it is what my partner, a software engineer, suggested. It's free, and I find it easy to use. The Help is quite good, and although I didn't do the installation and setup I think I could from reading the Help. The basic steps in FileZilla are:

1) log in
2) identify the files you want to upload from your computer (on the left of the screen)
3) identify where you want the files to go on the Rootsweb server (on the right of the screen)
4) drag the files from the listing on the left (your computer) to the folder on the right (Rootsweb) Top

If you are using a FTP utility, the server address is users.freepages.rootsweb.com

If you are using Windows Explorer, the address is ftp://userID:pasSWorD@users.freepages.rootsweb.com

Are PDF files allowed on freepages now? I thought the agreement I saw when I signed up for my freepages account said that PDF's were the one file type I was not supposed to use since they couldn't display the ad banners that pay for our free web space?

It could be a security program that is blocking FTP transfers from your end. Check your security utilities, firewall, blockers, etc. to be sure they allow FTP connections. If you have updated your security lately, that could be the problem.

To check the status of FTP on the server, try uploading with File Manager, freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman/

Tombstone photographs
I have finally began using my site as it should be used and want some ideas (and hope I have posted this question in the correct place) as I have taken over 10,000 tombstone photographs and have placed the majority of them on findagrave.com.
Thus far, I have about 3 cemeteries transcribed on my site and am wondering whether most of you post the cemetery photos as well or just post those that are family or not at all if they are posted elsewhere on the web.
Before I end this posting, I want to give a HUGE THANKS to Pat Geary without whom I couldn't have even begun this site!! I still have much to learn and am taking little baby steps into adding to this website.

9-11-2008 Freepages-Help:
The Windows XP FTP client is a command line driven beast, and perhaps you may be interested in using a free FTP Client program such as FileZilla.

By inserting special characters in your file names, some browsers may have problems with them. File names on the web should contain only alpha-numeric characters, h-phens, under_scores, and a single dot/period between the file name and the file extension. See http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/naming.htm

Passive mode FTP is no longer supported in DOS. Early versions of Windows ran on top of DOS, but since Windows Millenium Edition (I think that's the right one), the reverse has been true, and fewer and fewer functions are being included in DOS.

With an FTP client built in to Explorer.exe, using DOS for command line FTP is no longer necessary.
