A Requiem of the Past

THE INTERVIEW

OPEN-ENDED INTERVIEW WITH THE VERVE

Richard Ashcroft & Simon Jones

1. To begin, let's pick up the story after your last single "History", the song that marked the band's split in 1995.

2. Were there any overriding lessons you learnt from that period?

3. If you want to get your point of view across to the people, why are you so reluctant to do interviews?

4. The Verve's reunion was delayed by your guitarist Nick McCabe who only rejoined the band at the beginning of this year  - how important was it for you to get him back on board?

5. Do your songs evolve from the band's jam sessions or do they come in a flash of inspiration?

6. So do you think that element of magic in the music can only exist when the whole band comes together?

7. You mentioned you love "classic songs" - when you record are you conscious off creating a classic?

8. So tell me about your song 'The Drugs Don't Work' - is it as much about addiction to loving a person as it is about the illegal substances?

9. How much autobiography is there in these lyrics?

10. What about the song 'The Rolling People'?

11. You said earlier that you're the band's biggest fan - what would be your favourite track?

12. There's a secret track at the end of the album - is there a story behind this one?

13. How do you view your success?

14. As we mentioned earlier, you are a band in control of your career with our own people doing your artwork and videos.  How much are you actually involved with this side of things and what's going to happen when you get short of time?

15. Do you feel artists like yourselves have to try and change attitudes in today's music business?

16. How do you make sure the music comes across as you intended when so much is in the hands of the marketing people?

17. There's a line in the "Bitter Sweet Symphony" that goes "but the airwaves are clean and there’s nobody singing to me now".  Is that how you feel or is there current music you enjoy listening to?

18. You've found time to collaborate with DJ Shadow for a Mo'Wax release....

19.  Finally, how do you feel about the whole issue surrounding your Rolling Stones "sample" on "Bitter Sweet Symphony"?  After all you only used a tiny fragment of their song "The Last Time'....
