Laughing Eyes by Elmer Ake |

Sometimes in the evening when you sit and doze Your memory returns to times long ago. You reflect on how fast time fly's And no matter how hard you try You can't remember the names of all the guys. But you can't forget the girl with laughing eyes. When the mists of time finally clears away and you can see back to that long ago day. Then that half forgotten ache returns to your heart That memory from which you can never part. Your mind will flicker, jump and dart To the girl you loved from the start. In a land that then was so far away She returns to haunt you in your later days. Ruby lips pouting beneath summer sky's Long blond hair that swirls and fly's Sun tanned knee's, long white thighs. How I loved the girl with laughing eye's. Eighteen years old and full of pride With an inner fear she tried to hide. A couple of girls on a shady street Stopped by two soldiers they chanced to meet. We were just lonesome, they were so sweet Thats when my heart fell at her feet. We were the victors that long ago They were part of the vanquished foe. She spoke a language I barely know But I saw her hair was blonde and her eye's were blue. What she was saying was probalby true And I was thinking, I sure could love you. It was on the other side of the world That I knew a girl whose hair was curled. In another world at another time I knew a girl that I thought was mine. But sometimes love withers on the vine And lays in the dust you leave behind. Is this the foe I was taught to hate Is this the enemy that was at the gate? I crossed the angry stormy sea's Crawled through the mud on my knees's Heard my dying comrades plea's And God said thy shall love thine enemy. Now I meet my foe face to face But with malice there is no trace. She raises her head and smiles at me My knee's grow weak I want to flee I stammer I stutter, and God I swear to thee I'm not the man I'm trying to be. And so began the war of love It will only be settled by God above In the war of love, girls don't fight fair They use all weapons, even their hair. Her locks hung down in a braided pair And her smiling lips were mine to share. I remember the summer we walked hand and hand Through the ruins of that unhappy land. I remember bright blue summer sky's I remember her happy youthful cry's. And I think of a love that can never die. Oh, how I remember the girl with the laughing eye's. Now when summer sky's fills with autumn rain I still go back and relive the pain. One day there came a soldier she thought was lost The man who was her long betrothed. That she thought was sleeping somewhere beneath a cross. And into the trash my dreams were tossed. He said she had promised to be his wife His words cut my heart like a knife. And when he said he loved her so I knew it was time for me to go. For in my heart that love I also know. And in my mind it will always grow. I see her now through the mists of time The girl that will always be mine. Now that I am old and my spirit will soon fly Too seek Gods heaven in the sky. And the only eulogy to say when I die, He went to find the girl with laughing eye's. |
