Spawn: Armageddon

I like Spawn. Spawn is a serious bad ass. Sadly though, Spawn's video games seem to like making him a much like any other video gamer hero - a guy that can swing a weapon, shoot guns, and slow down time. This game portrays him better than the other attempts have, but I still feel like I'm at a disadvantage when playing as this ultra bad ass mamma-jamma, created by Satan of course.

Armageddon has a decent story but it's still not up to par with one of the comics. It's about even steven with the movie which isn't saying much. There's one good boss fight the came as a surprise to me, but in the end it's just too plain to be compelling. The controls are solid, but Spawn is often unresponsive so it kind of evens out, just a step ahead of frustrating. For example, Spawn has some nifty abilities like hanging on to ledges, double jump cape gliding, and wall jumping. The shitty fact is that Spawn doesn't cooperate and often times leaves you falling in to a boiling pit of lava in the furthest depths of hell.

The battles are entertaining, but I got sick of using the same strategy on every boss. If you can't axe it, you can launch your chains at it. That right there will get you through the game. I beat 5 out of 6 bosses by walking circles around them and chaining them to death. That's not very good for the A.I.

The sounds are pretty generic and boring, as the same battle tune plays every time you approach an enemy. The character acting is done well, and I actually think some of the same actors from the movie spoke their dialogue in the game, but I'm not certain. The graphics are sloppy, and there’s usually not anything going on in the backgrounds so it's pretty bland to look at. Rocks look like paper cut outs and mountains look like they were just put in to have something there. Spawn, himself looks good as do the enemies and characters, but it's just not enough to boost the games overall look.

Armageddon is another renter. I bought it because it was 20 bucks and I happen to like Spawn. I just hope that someday someone will create a game that lives up to the comics. Sad to say, this isn't it.
