Ivy's father was driven insane by his pursuit of the Soul Edge. After his death, her mother was on her own deathbed, and told Ivy that they were not her birth parents. To honor her adoptive father's wishes, she hunted for Soul Edge herself, but in her pursuit, learned that it fed on human souls, and vowed to destroy the blade. During her journey, she crossed paths with Nightmare, the one who gave the sword life. She agreed to help him summon souls, unaware it was part of the weapon's plans. She discovered the truth on the day that Nightmare was defeated by the warrior carrying Soul Calibur. She realized that Nightmare possessed Soul Edge, and that her birth father was also manipulated by the evil blade. She became shaken by this truth, and returned home. After months, Ivy had a new goal, to completely wipe out the sword's existence.

Ivy's Valentine sword gives her an amazing strength. It allows her to fight very well in close combat while it's in sword form, and even better at longer distances in whip form. This also makes her one of the more difficult characters to master. Even though her whip has a few moves that can reach across screen, it's average reach puts her in second place for reach to Kilik. She has many powerful attacks that come in quick strikes, and she can keep an enemy guessing with her attacks, as they don't seem to follow a set pattern. She has two powerful summoning attacks that can take out half of an opponent's life bar, but they are also the most difficult moves in the game.

Only issue with Ivy's whip is that sometimes it's hard to land attacks. It's rather easy to sidestep an attack, for a seasoned player that knows what her moves look like. Many of her long ranged attacks take a moment to set up, so if a player knows it's coming, they can run through the attack and begin on a combo against Ivy. If Ivy makes too many of these mistakes, then it can cost her the match.
