Nintendo's DS and Sega

SEGA president Hisao Oguchi has revealed in an interview with Nikkei Industrial Daily that SEGA is currently in possession of development tools for the Nintendo DS. However, news on the development of any game titles had not been disclosed

EA signs with Marvel for superhero games


Electronic Arts has signed a new deal with comic book empire Marvel which will see the company developing a series of fighting games featuring Marvel superheroes and a range of new characters. The deal encompasses the majority of Marvel's superhero franchises, and will allow EA to include characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men in its games even though they are already covered by videogame deals with Activision.

Further investment in PS3 technology

IBM Corp., the world's largest computer maker, received $325 million from Sony Corp. to help outfit IBM's East Fishkill, N.Y., factory to make a new type of computer chip. The investment comes from 1.1 billion Sony is spending on its plants and with Toshiba Corp. to make so-called CELL CHIPS for consumer devices including Sony's PS3.
Mafia Now Available for the PlayStation 2

Gathering announced that Mafia for the PlayStation 2 is in retail stores in North America and the English language PAL version of the title is available in Europe. The non-English language PlayStation 2 versions will be available in Europe on February 13th. Mafia for the Xbox video game system from Microsoft will be in stores in March in both North America and Europe. In the United States, Mafia is rated M for Mature and is available for the SRP of $49.99. [More]
 
Nintendo's list for 2004

Nintendo of America has officially released a list of games exclusively appearing on their game platforms in 2004. With this list, many games such as Resident Evil 4 and Star Fox 2 have finally been given official release dates from Nintendo. However, many may notice that these games listed are those which gamers have known about for quite some time, and it’s a sure bet that many more will be added as E3 approaches with each passing day. Pandora Tomorrow on the PS2 and GameCube Delayed

UbiSoft has announced in their 3rd quarter financial earnings report that the PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow have been delayed to an, as of the moment, unknown date. However, the PC, GBA, and Xbox versions of Sam Fisher’s anticipated return is still on track for a March 2004 release.
 
Plans for Prince of Persia Sequel

UbiSoft officially confirmed in a 3rd quarter earnings report released that a Prince of Persia sequel is already in the planning stages, despite the game’s somewhat disappointing sales.
 
GameStop is to stop selling Nokia's N-Gage

GameStop has announced that it is to stop selling Nokia's N-Gage game deck 450 of its stores, representing almost a third of its retail outlets, with remaining inventory being moved to other stores. Although GameStop is relocating the inventory rather than ditching the product entirely, the news still comes as a further blow to Nokia in the USA, where the image of the N-Gage has already been tarnished by massive discounting.
 
Ubisoft reports 20 per cent rise in Q3 sales

Ubisoft has announced its consolidated sales figures for the quarter ended December 31st, revealing a 20 per cent rise over the previous year and leaving the company on track to meet its full year targets. Sales for the third quarter totalled €227.7 million, as compared with last year's Q3 sales of €190.5 million - a respectable rise, although perhaps less than Ubisoft might have hoped for given the quality of its pre-Christmas line up. For the nine months leading up to the end of 2003, the company reported sales of €356.5 million, a healthy rise of some 30 per cent over the €274 million figure reported in the previous year. This puts Ubisoft on track to meet its full year sales target of €490 million at the end of March, with an operating income figure of €15 million expected for the full year. This figure will be lifted by the arrival of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow on Xbox, PC and GBA in time for the end of the company's fiscal year.

GameCube Linux Alpha is a a 1 MB busybox-based Linux system that contains screen output, network code, a telnet server and a webserver was recently released along with a kernel patch.

Mad Catz sales reports

Mad Catz Interactive has today announced its financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2003. The videogame accessories manufacturer enjoyed record sales in its fiscal third quarter despite achieving only what it described as 'mixed results' for the holiday season. Net sales for the third quarter ended December 31 were $42 million, up from $40.1 million for the same period a year earlier. Gross profit for the quarter rose to $9.7 million from $9.6 million 12 months ago. Net sales for the nine months ended December 31 increased 15.8 percent from $70 million a year ago, to $81.1 million. Gross profit for the nine-month period increased 21.1 percent to $18.2 million from $15.1 million.

Argonaut developing the Catwoman for EA

Argonaut (a UK developer), has been revealed that be working on a new game, Catwoman (Catwoman
is based on Warner Bros' forthcoming summer action movie). The game developing for publisher Electronic Arts, with work on the title already well progressed. The game is being produced under the auspices of Electronic Arts' UK studio, and with a launch apparently scheduled alongside the movie towards the end of July, production is well underway at Argonaut's headquarters in North London.
PGEN v1.2 Released!

PGEN v1.2 has been released.PGEN is a emulator of Sega's Mega Drive for PS2. It is mainly a bugfix release, and fixes issues with the zipped rom support and booting via a swap disc (ie: AR2).

Microsoft's plans for Xbox 2

A senior source at Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox2 will use multiple PowerPC processors in parallel.The hard drive may not be shipped as standard, being supplied as an optional extra instead. This information confirms reports received from developers over the past weeks, with the first solid facts about the Xbox 2 slipping out after Microsoft briefed a number of its key development partners on the current state of the system. Our sources indicate that the console will use "four or more" of the IBM PowerPC processors, an architecture which will force game developers to significantly rethink the way that games are programmed in order to take full advantage of it.

A new version of PacMan

Pacman is 20 years old and has been played over 10 billion times according to Namco and now he is about to return to his roots. Nintendo are about to release an Old-Skool, visually, version of Pac-Man with a twist. The game will look and feel like the original. Following the current trend in console gaming Pac-Man Vs will offer a multiplayer mode.
Pac-Man Vs will allow up to 4 people to play at the same time with three players controlling the ghosts, Inky, Pinky, eh Clyde, on a TV while a fourth will make sure he munches as many pills, or is it blue and yellow, purple hills, as he can through a GBA. Those playing as the amiable but not too bright yellow man will have a full view of the level while the ghosts chasing our friend will have a limited field of vision, only able to see the maze from the inside. Pacman will be bundled free with other Namco GameCube games. The first ones to include the pill-muncher will be R: Racing Evolution, and I-Ninja.
 
Irem's New Project

The Japanese developer Irem (known for their shooting game "R-Type") has announced plans to unveil a new project. According to a company spokesperson, Irem plans to unveil a brand new game on February 6 in Japan. Details regarding the project and its target platform remain undisclosed.
 
Capcom's Bonus DVD?

Capcom has announced plans to offer a special bonus disc to customers who purchase "Onimusha 3" in Japan. Available at participating retailers, customers will receive a DVD video which chronicles the making of the game. Lasting approximately 50 minutes, the disc features behind the scenes footage of motion capture sessions, artist sketches and development team interviews. For reference, Onimusha 3 is scheduled for release on February 26 for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. It's currently unknown whether the promotion will be expanded to the North American or European markets.
 
Activision will Ship True Crime for the PC in the Spring

Activision has announced that the hit title True Crime: Streets of L.A. will be coming to the PC this spring. The new version will take the driving, fighting and shooting action online with all-new multiplayer features, as well as new weapons and unlockable characters. True Crime: Streets of L.A. for the PC has not yet been rated by the ESRB. True Crime: Streets of L.A. will feature online multiplayer gameplay. Using either GameSpy or a Local Area Network (LAN), up to four players can join up and play any of five different multiplayer games.
 
Release date of Halo 2 announced

Microsoft has ended speculation on the release date of Halo 2 by officially announcing that it will be released, on XBox,in Fall 2004. The announcement comes as a blow to the many fans of the game since most expected a June 2004 release date. As the sequel to the best ever selling Microsoft title, Halo 2 has raised expectations and is guaranteed to bring even more gamers to the XBox since it will also include an online multiplayer mode utilizing XBox Live
