May 9, 2000 Hempfield defeated Warwick 15-6 16-14. Great match! 29 rotations in the second game compared to 10 in the first. Tonight was fun in the hot (90*) Warwick gym. Hempfield held off the warriors and won in two. Hempfield ended section 1 play without losing a game. Hempfield won the Dallastown Tournament on 5-6-00, Defeating York Suburban and the heat in the finals 6-11, 11-7, 11-5; New Oxford 11-2, 11-7 in the semifinals; Chambersburg 15-6 in the quarter finals; and was 6-0 in pool play. Hempfield's JV also won the Dallastown JV Tournament. Varsity stats on the results page. 5-4-00 Hempfield defeats Cedar Crest 15-4, 15-4 and clinches first in Section 1. It was the last home LLL match for 7 Hempfield seniors, Derek Shultz, Randy Paules, Patrick Shawaryn, Adam Greenawalt, Rob Fisher and managers Betsy Hall and Travis Webb. BTW, Cedar Crest is ranked # 16 in the PVCA poll. Hempfield Scoring: Matt Baker 1 ace; Derek Shultz 7 kills; Adam Greenawalt 3 blocks. Team news: The coaching staff was worried in the first game after Hempfield fell behind 2-3. Someone reminded Coach Vogel that Setter Randy Paules just flew in from Jamaica to be with his buddies on senior night. Acting upon this knowledge the staff inserted the sunburned Paules and got instant results. The Hempfield seniors along with The Spangler, Big Ben, Card Shark Porreca and Tall Matt put the clamps on Cedar Crest. However, Shultz and Shawaryn had to be pulled in the second game at 14-1 due to fatigue. Steve Mummaw and Keith Maurer came to the rescue and finish off Cedar Crest 15-4. 5-2-00, Hempfield defeated Ephrata 15-5, 15-9. Scoring: Fisher and Greenawalt 9 kills, Fisher and Shultz 2 aces, Fisher 3 blocks. Match notes: Adam Greenawalt tripped over the centerline and was lucky he didn't injure his leg as he collided with the net support. The coaching staff was concerned about Adam's situation because Hempfield only had two middle blockers eligible to play. However, DS Mike Porreca informed the staff that he was ready if Adam couldn't continue. FWIW, Adam played through the pain and finished the match. Post match news: Porreca, Murray and Greenawalt put on a serving clinic for the Ephrata fans and walked away with 3 free pizzas. The coaching staff was impressed that Porreca participated in the serving clinic. Hempfield Volleyball was proud to have our most consistent server demonstrating the correct technique! Rumor has it, that in the festive spirit of the evening two of the three Hempfield players (that won pizzas), donated their prize to the refs for calling an outstanding match and explaining to Derek that a touch off the block is considered a contact. News: Warwick Volleyball Classic 2000: Hempfield defeated Cedar Crest 15-1, 15-10 in the finals and Penn Manor in the semifinals 15-9, 15-5 to win the tournament. Hempfield was 8-0 in pool play, defeating Cedar Crest, Garden Spot, Northern, and Central York. In the finals Rob Fisher put on a BLOCKING and serving clinic! Only 5 rotations in the first game and Cedar Crest is a very good team! Fisher had to be pulled out in the second game to get some rotations. Fisher had 3 aces, 9 solo blocks and 2 kills on 2 swings. Shultz passed a 2.6 and hit .416 with 9 kills. Excellent team (2.4) passing ! Paules and Shawaryn set the final match. Everyone played in the final game of the day. Stats on the results page. Hempfield's JV won the Junior Varsity tournament defeating Garden Spot in the finals. Warwick Tournament notes: All the teams in the final four teams were LLL section 1 teams. Hempfield's unofficial season record including 5 tournament victories is 41-0-1. Thursday, 4-27-00 @ home: Hempfield defeated Manheim Township 15-5, 15-8; JV 15-10, 15-7. Game notes: Randy Paules returns after missing 35 matches. 5' 3" Hempfield setter Matt Baker comes off the bench and stuff blocks Township on game point to end the match. Lake Lehman JV Tournament (4-21-00) - Hempfield lost in the semifinals, no details. Lake Lehman Varsity Tournament (4-22-00) Results: Hempfield defeated Exeter in the finals 15-10, 15-2; Central Bucks West in the semi-finals 11-5, 11-1. Some important details: A great tournament but the Easter egg hunt should have been cancelled! Shultz from Hempfield hurt his back bending over looking for Easter eggs and Fisher also from Hempfield had an upset stomach from eating too many chocolate bunnies. Plus, Lake Lehman had four players hunting eggs in the wrong field after asking Adam Greenawalt (Hempfield) where to look for the special egg! BTW, Please contact Jeff Wismer of CBW if you did not receive your Easter Basket. Thanks, Lake Lehman for a great tournament, Peter Rabbit Lost and Found: One pair of sunglasses near the Pennridge bench.
North Alleghney in the semi-finals 15-6. Central York in the quarter finals 15-5. 8-0 Pool Play: Dallastown 11-4, 11-8; Derry 11-2, 11-3; Mt. Lebanon 11-8, 11-3; Souderton 11-5, 11-2. All Tournament Team: Tony Spangler, Pat Shawaryn, Ben Murray, Derek Shultz Panther Classic History: Hempfield won in 1997. Hempfield wins the JV Panther Classic April 14, 2000!
