ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A visit from Tennessee plus playing in three tournaments highlight the 1999 UNC Asheville volleyball schedule. The 32-match schedule was announced by Bulldog head coach Julie Torbett today.
"It's a pretty tough schedule, especially in the first month of the season when we play in some tournaments with some very good teams in it," stated Torbett. "However, this will prepare us for play in the Big South Conference and get us ready for the conference matches."
UNCA will open the season at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational on Sept. 3-4. The Bulldogs will take on Evansville and LaSalle the first day before battling Middle Tennessee and College of Charleston the following day. Asheville's home opener will be against Norfolk State on Sept. 10, followed by another home match wi th East Tennessee State on Sept. 14.
Later in the month, the Bulldogs will participate in the Mercer Invitational (Sept. 17-81) and the Central Florida Invitational (Sept. 24-25). The UCF tourney includes matches against teams such as Rice, St. John's and Central Florida. UNCA will ope n Big South Conference play the following weekend with home matches against Elon and High Point.
The Bulldogs will also play host to Tennessee of the SEC Tuesday, Oct. 12. UT came to Asheville two years and played a great match that the Lady Vols won in four close games. The match set NCAA records for both teams for attempts and digs. The season will conclude with the Big South Conference tournament at Charleston Southern, Nov. 19-20 with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Justice Center on the campus of UNC Asheville will be the site of the 1998 Big South Conference Volleyball tournament this weekend. Play will begin Friday at 1 p.m. when eventual conference teams Elon and High Point will play an exhibition match. The tournament will then have two more matches on Friday with #3 seed Coastal Carolina taking on #6 seed Charleston Southern at 4 p.m., followed by #4 seed UNC Asheville hosting #5 seed Winthrop at 7 p.m.
UNC Asheville finished the regular season with a 17-12 overall record and split its two matches with the Lady Eagles during the year. Winthrop won a five-set thriller in Rock Hill before UNCA won an emotional three-game match at the Justice Center tw o weeks later.

#1 seed Liberty and #2 seed Radford earned byes into the semifinals of the tournament and will start play Saturday. Liberty, the defending Big South champion, will battle the winner of UNCA and Winthrop at 11 a.m. Radford will take on the Charleston Southern-Coastal Coastal winner at 1:30 p.m. The championship match is slated for 7 p.m. with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Tickets will be $5 for adults for an all-day
pass with and $3 for children (5-18). UNCA students will get in

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior Cally Geiger moved into second place on UNC Asheville's all-time kill list as the Bulldogs moved past North Carolina A&T in four games to win their seventh straight home match Tuesday night at Justice Center. UNCA won the mat ch 15-12, 15-9, 5-15, 15-9.
Geiger, playing her final regular season home match, picked up 21 kills and now has 1751 career kills putting her in second place on the school's all-time list. She is now just 24 kills behind former Bulldog Elissa Steffen's mark of 1775 kills which is the school record. Geiger will try and move past Steffen this weekend when the Bulldogs are on the road playing two important Big South Conference matches at Charleston Southern (Friday) and Coastal Carolina (Saturday).
The victory improved UNCA's record to 16-11 and was the Bulldogs 13th win in the last 18 matches.
The match was a tough one as the Bulldogs had to survive a tough North Carolina A&T (15-15) attack, which had five players in double figures in kills for the match. Leading the way for the Aggies was Vania Blake with 20 kills. Chandra Hicks added 1 3 kills for UNCA, while Jessica Keys and Jennifer Baker combined for 23 kills.

ASHEVILLE, NC - UNC Asheville's volleyball team won both of their matches this past weekend on their home turf in the Justice Center. The Bulldogs won both contests against future Big South Conference rivals Elon College and High Point Universty in three games.
Elon gave the Bulldogs a scare in the second game of Friday night's match but UNCA hung in there and pulled off the win at 19-17. UNCA was in control of the match the whole time and won the other two games 15-7, 15-8. The Asheville attack was led once again by junior Chandra Hicks and senior Cally Geiger who each had 15 kills, and by junior Jennifer Baker who pitched in 13 kills and a stunning 21 digs.
UNCA defeated High Point with games scores of 15-9, 15-2, and 15-13. The Bulldogs were led by Cally Geiger and Jennifer Baker who contributed 14 and 10 kills, respectively. The Bulldogs were also inspired by the play of freshman Heather Terrell who came in to game two and pitched in 4 kills and an exciting 2 solo blocks.
The Bulldogs travel to
Charleston this weekend to face Charleston Southern and Coastal
Carolina in their last weekend of Big South play. Then it's home
to the Justice Center for the Conference tournament on Nov.
20-21.
The UNC Asheville volleyball team put an end to their six match winning streak this past weekend. The Bulldogs dropped two conference matches to Liberty and Radford while on the road in Virginia.
The game scores for the match against Liberty were 6-15, 15-10, 4-15, 13-15. UNCA had a chance to win game four as they broke out to a 11-7 lead against the Eagles but a couple of key mistakes gave Liberty the advantage and consequently the win. UNCA was led by junior Jennifer Baker who contributed 19 kills and 13 digs. Senior Cally Geiger also pitched in with 15 kills and 10 digs for the Bulldogs. Liberty's attack was led by Anthonia Akpama with 23 kills.
The Radford Highlanders gave
UNCA a tough time on Sunday afternoon as they beat the Bulldogs
15-13, 15-4, 14-9. This loss moves UNCA to a 3-5 mark in Big
South Conference play. The Bulldog offense was led once again by
Senior Cally Geiger and Juniors Jennifer Baker and Chandra Hicks who
contributed 10, 9, and 8 kills, respectively.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Jennifer Baker had 18 kills to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-0 Big South Conference volleyball win over visiting Winthrop Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (3-3, 13-9) won for the sixth straight time, the longest winning streak in three seasons. UNCA won the match 15-12, 15-12, 15-9. The Lady Eagles (2-4, 14-10) lost for the just the third time in their last 10 matches.
Joining Baker in double figures in kills for Asheville was Cally Geiger. She contributed 14 kills and Chandra Hicks ptiched in 10 kills. Kara Galer led Winthrop with 18 kills.
Baker enjoyed a great match with 18 kills on 36 attempts. She didn't make any errors.
"Jennifer Baker had a great match and really carried us today," stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "I was really pleased with the way we found ways to win the first two games when we were behind. This is a big win for us against a tough team in Wint hrop."

UNC ASHEVILLE DOWNS EAST TENNESSEE STATE IN THREE GAMES
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Cally Geiger and Chandra Hicks combined for 23 kills to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-0 non-conference college volleyball victory over East Tennessee State at Justice Center Tuesday night. The scores were 15-6, 17-15, 15-13.
The Bulldogs (12-9) won for the fifth straight time, the team's longest winning streak in two seasons. East Tennessee State fell to 4-15 overall.
Geiger led the Asheville attack with 12 kills, while Hicks added 11 and UNCA had an excellent night serving with 11 service aces.
"We served the ball very well tonight and played well in stretches," stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "I was really pleased with the way we fought back to win the second and third games. We were behind in both games but came back and found a way t o win it. ETSU is pretty banged up right now but they made it tough for us, like we knew they would."

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Cally Geiger had 24 kills and 19 digs to lead UNC Asheville to an exciting 4-game win over Coastal Carolina at Justice Center Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won 15-7, 15-10, 10-15, 15-13 to win their fourth straight match and improv e to 11-9 overall and 2-3 in the Big South. The Lady Chants fell to 3-2 in the league and 13-10 overall and lost for just the fourth time in the last 17 matches.
"We played very well today, perhaps our best match of the year," stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "We were focused from the start and even when they rallied, we held our composure and got the job done. I thought Cally Geiger was sensational with t he way she hit the ball but our whole team played well today."
Joining Geiger in double figures for kills for UNC Asheville was junior Chandra Hicks with 15 kills and seven blocks. Jennifer Baker contributed 12 kills and a team-high 20 digs.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Cally Geiger picked up 22 kills and 11 digs to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-1 Big South Conference win over Charleston Southern at Justice Center Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (1-0, 10-9) won for the third straight time as they were able to hold off a scrappy Charleston Southern (0-5, 6-16) team that made UNCA work for the win. The scores of the match were 15-5, 15-13, 12-15, 15-8.
Joing Geiger in double figures for kills were Jennifer Baker with 15
kills and 12 digs. Chandra Hicks added nine kills and seven
blocks. Charleston Southern was led by Allison Arreola and Catie
Bumber with 13 kills each. Jennifer Begich contributed 1 2 kills
and 12 digs.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up two road victories over the weekend to even its record at 9-9. The Bulldogs downed High Point in four games Friday night and then won at Elon College Saturday night, also in four games.
After a heartbreaking loss at Winthrop last Tuesday, UNCA needed to get back in the victory column and did just that week on its trip to the Triad. Bulldog coach Julie Torbett was pleased that her team was able to get two wins this weekend.
"We played well at times and at other times we didn't but we won and that's really all that counts," stated Torbett. "Both High Point and Elon have had some good moments this year and we knew it wouldn't be easy at either place. It was to the girl's credit we did it when we had to. Hopefully, we'll build on this and put together a winning streak and get some conference wins."
UNCA won the High Point match 15-9, 15-13, 13-15, 15-0. Cally Geiger led the Bulldogs with 21 kills and 20 digs. Jennifer Baker added 13 kills and 19 digs, while freshman Beth Rodriguez chipped in 12 kills and nine digs. Freshman setter Jessica Beal had 61 assists. In the Elon victory, the Bulldogs won 15-3, 15-7, 7-15, 15-6. Geiger led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and 10 digs. UNCA's serving was very good in this match as the Bulldogs had a season-high 11 aces. Khristine Ambrose and Geiger had four each.
The Bulldogs have all of this week to get ready for two very important Big South Conference matches. Asheville will battle Charleston Southern Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a home date with Coastal Carolina Sunday, also at 2 p.m. UNCA is looking for its first league victory as the Bulldogs are 0-3 in league play with two of the losses being in five games.
"We need to get some wins in conference play," commented Torbett. "Charleston Southern is very much improved from last year, while Coastal Carolina is always tough on us. I expect two tough matches and hopefully we'll be ready to play.
"We're improving as the
year goes on but we still have to keep working to get
better," Torbett also said. "I hope having this week
off will help get us better and ready to play this weekend."

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Radford had four players in double figures in kills as the Lady Highlanders used a balanced attack to pick up a key Big South Conference volleyball victory over UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon. It was Radford's first win over UNCA in Asheville in 10 years. The scores were 7-15, 15-3, 15-7, 15-6.
The Highlanders (2-0, 8-6) were led by Laura Marcuson's 19 kills, while Ami Orr added 17 kills. Maura Logan chipped in 16 kills, while Katie Sherwood contributed 10 kills and 20 digs. UNC Asheville (0-2, 7-8) was led by Jennifer Baker's 16 kills. Jun ior Cha-Cha Hicks added 12 kills and four blocks.
"Radford is really a good team this year and they showed that today," stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "We could have played better and should have but I was very impressed with Radford. They're going to be awfully tough to beat this year in the B ig South."
The Bulldogs jumped out of the
gates quickly and won the first game 15-7 behing seven kills from
Baker. However, Radford quickly took charge of the match in game
two and won handily 15-3. The Highlanders raced to an 8-1 lead in
the third game before UNCA made a move to cut the lead to 8-5.
However, Radford's blocking attack was too much for the Bulldogs
and the Highlanders won the third game 15-7 and then closed the
match out at 15-6 in the fourth game.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kyrie Dorn had 21 kills to help lead Liberty to a five-game win over UNC Asheville at Justice Center Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference volleyball action.
The Lady Flames (2-0, 8-8) trailed in the fifth and deciding game 8-2 before rallying for a 15-13 victory in the game to pull out the Big South victory. Liberty won the match 8-15, 15-7, 15-13, 12-15, 15-13.
Joining Dorn in double figures for kills was Anthonia Akpama with 18, while Jessica Wilson and Summer Elmquist added 10 kills each.
UNC Asheville (0-1, 7-7) was led by Cally Gieger's 19 kills and nine digs. Jennifer Baker added seven kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Khristine Ambrose picked up two service aces and 16 digs.
"It was a great match and I
couldn't be prouder of our effort and the job we did,"
stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "Liberty is the
defending conference champion and you have to put them away and
we just couldn't quite do it in the fifth game. But that's simply
a case where you have to give Liberty the credit for coming back
like it did. We didn't give it to them. They earned it and we'll
learn from it."

UNCA VOLLEYBALL CLAIMS COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON TOURNAMENT
Cally Geiger Named MVP
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team put its best weekend of volleyball together in Charleston last weekend and as a result the Bulldogs claimed the College of Charleston Invitational by winning four straight matches.
UNCA, not only won went 4-0 in the tournament, but won each match in three games. The Bulldogs never lost a game in the two-day tournament and raised their overall record to 7-6. It was Asheville's first tournament championship since 1995 and made fo r a great weekend in Charleston.
"We got better as each match went on," stated Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "I was really pleased with the way we stepped up our game when we had to. This should give us a lot of confidence as we head into conference play this weekend."
The Bulldogs open conference play Saturday and Sunday at home. UNCA will host defending league champ Liberty Saturday at 2 p.m. and will then take on Radford the next day also at 2 p.m.
UNCA opened the tournament last Friday with a 3-0 win over Citadel, 15-3, 15-7, 15-5 and then had to fight hard to beat North Carolina A&T 20-18, 15-8, 15-13. On Saturday, the Bulldogs got out of the gates quickly and roared past Stetson 15-10, 15-6, 15-11. In the final match of the day, UNCA whipped host College of Charleston 15-7, 15-13, 15-5.
Cally Geiger was named tournament MVP and enjoyed a great tournament by knocking down 50 kills in UNCA's four matches. Junior Jennifer Baker was named to the all-tournament team as she collected 52 kills and 40 digs.
"We had a real team effort this weekend," commented Torbett. "We had to play Stetson at 9 a.m. Saturday and that's not easy but we were able to get the job done."

want to get off to a good start in conference but it won't be
easy against two very good teams like Liberty and Radford."

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team put together some good matches this past weekend and as a result finished second at the UNC Greensboro Invitational. The Bulldogs whipped up on UNC Wilmington and High Point in three games before lo sing to host Greensboro in the title match in four games. UNCA's record improves to 3-5.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament against UNC Wilmington Friday afternoon. UNCA had barely beaten the Seahawks a week earlier but this one wasn't close as the Bulldogs roared past UNCW 15-0, 15-5, 15-10. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Baker paced th e Bulldog attack with 12 kills and six digs. Senior middle hitter Cally Geiger added eight kils and 11 digs. Junior blocker Cha-Cha Hicks picked up five kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Jessica Beal contributed 27 assists.
The next morning UNCA battled High Point and won comfortably 15-4, 15-8, 15-13. Head Coach Julie Torbett played everyone as the Bulldogs rolled to their second straight victory of the tournament. Geiger enjoyed a sensational match with 15 kills on 22 attempts. Baker added nine kills and seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Jessica Keys had seven kills and five digs. Beal chipped in 35 assists.
In the finale against UNC Greensboro, the Bulldogs took the first game 15-3 but the Spartans came back to win the next three, 15-10, 15-8, 15-5 to claim the tourney title. Geiger had a game-high 14 kills, while Hicks added nine kills and two blocks. Beal had 32 assists and 11 digs.
"We played pretty well for the most part," stated Torbett. "Against UNC Greensboro, we did a good job in the first game and then made some receive errors in the second game to get them going. We're still young but we're getting better."
The Bulldogs play at Tennessee Tuesday night and then head to the College of Charleston Invitational this weekend. UNCA will play The Citadel, College of Charleston, Stetson and North Carolina A&T this weekend.
"Tennessee will be a really good test for us," stated Torbett. "They have an outstanding team that is getting better and better with each season. We battled them tough here last year (UT won in four games) and we hope to give them a good battle again .
"The tournament at Charleston is winnable," added Torbett. "We'll have to play well to do it but we're capable."
