Jacob Hilyard

son of Thomas and Elizabeth Haught Hilyard

Descendants of Jacob Hilyard on the mailing list:

Jacob was born 8 Dec 1814, according to the family Bible. Written onto the transcription of the Bible that I have is the following: "m. 1st Agnes Hufford, m. 2nd Martha Evanston", but I have not yet tried to verify these.

In the 1840 census of Falls Township, Hocking County, Ohio (which is adjacent to Fairfield County), is this entry on p. 144:

HILYARD, Jacob

1 male 15-20
1 male 20-30
1 female 15-20

I would note that Jacob is not mentioned in the partition of his father's estate, so he may have died before 1855.

Is This Our Jacob?

Bruce Hilliard and Jeff Genet both found my website around the same time in 2002.  They are both descendants of Jacob Hilyard and Martha Eviston, but had not been in contact with each other previously.  I “introduced” them via email, and we shared our family histories.  It would seem that our Jacob (son of Thomas and Elizabeth Haught Hilyard) and their Jacob, husband of Martha Eviston, are possibly the same person, though none of us has definitive proof yet.  The following is information shared by Bruce, posted here with his permission.

“I suspect that your Jacob is also ours.  I have the Hilyard/Hillyard family Bible, published in 1840, that has handwritten entries starting with Jacob.  It states ‘Jacob Hilyard was born May the 25th, 1807’. In comparing the handwriting it appears certain that these entries were made either by Mary, Jacob’s second wife, or another person after Martha’s passing, because the entries include Mary’s three children.

Jacob married Martha Eviston, born 1812 in Guernsey County, Ohio to Francis and Jemima Corder Eviston.  Martha died 1859 in Henry County, Iowa.  She married Jacob Hilyard on 12 April 1831 and they had eight children.”

[Vonda notes:  Our Jacobs are linked by the marriage. We have Jacob marrying Martha Evanston, they have Martha Eviston. Sound like the same person.  Both our Jacobs were born in Pennsylvania and are both supposedly of German heritage.  The major discrepancy occurs in the date of birth.  Our family Bible has Jacob born 8 Dec 1814.  This date is supported by the poor children tax records.  Their Hilyard family Bible shows Jacob’s birth on May 25, 1807, and another researcher of this line has the date as May 6, 1806.]

[Vonda’s notes:]

I found this family in the 1840 Federal Census of Madison Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, p. 344:

HILLIARD, Jacob

1 male under 5              Henry

1 male 5-10                  George

1 male 30-40                Jacob

1 female under 5           Margaret

1 female 5-10               Jemima

1 female 20-30             Martha

Evidence this may NOT be our Jacob is the census entry for a Jacob age 20-30 in Hocking County (see top of page).
