Shamanism is more the expression of an archaic technology of ecstasy/transcendence than a specific religion. Widespread throughout all reaches of the human world, shamanic symbolism forms much of the roots of ancient and modern religion and hero-myth. The core features of shamanism may include ecstatic states, inner/metaphysical journeys upward or downward, symbolic dismemberment and resurrection, visualisation, and meditation.
