DRESSING VICTORIAN

The Girls-Zena, Scraps and Bonique

Do you lay by the fireplace and picture your meowmie in a long flowing dress and wearing a corset? A hat bigger than you? Layers of clothing with laces and frills? Mew about what you think of the Victorian style of dress and how it compares to the way our meowmies dress now? Of course, comfort is better but would your meowmie have loved being a Victorian
lady and why...

My Meowmie, her mofur and two sisfurs like to dress Victorian. You will notice that they chose to dress furry formal. They are all wearing furry boofiful hats and have lace trim on their dresses. Meowmie likes lace on her sleeve cuffs. Meowmie's mofur and sisfur Rita enjoy carrying fans. They are holding them in a furry elegant way. Meowmie's sisfur Brenda loves her parasol to keep the sun and rain showers off of her boofiful dress. Meowmie's mofur is also wearing a shawl over her dress. The only fault that we two brofurs can find with their boofiful attire is that they forgot to wear gloves.

Shibui submits the following:

I have seen pictures of my meowmie in her younger days, so I know that she didn't always dress as casually as she does now. Once, she even had a long velvet dress; now, she seldom wears anything but blue jeans and T-shirts.

One of Meowmie's favorite paintings at Fort Worth's Kimbell Museum is "Miss May Sartoris" by Frederic Leighton. If we were transported back into Victorian times, I think Meowmie would wear a riding habit similar to the one Miss Sartoris posed in. It would be made of dark brown velvet, to match my ears. The jacket would be trimmed with ivory colored lace. She would wear a long, bright-colored silk scarf around her neck. Her large velvet hat would would be trimmed with pheasant feathers from my collection. She would, of course, wear a pair of high-top leather boots. She would never go barefoot like she does now.

If you would like to see the Leighton painting, it is at this location in the Kimbell Museum's permanent collection: http://www.kimbellart.org/missmay.htm

Nikita La Femme purrs:

After much discussion on how to dress up in an appropriate Victorian manner, and still maintain a degree of peace in the house, we have decided to dress like one of the true heroines of the time, Florence Nightengale.

The clothing would consist of a long grey skirt, white shirtwaist with a little lace around the collar, a grey jacket, black shoes, and a white lace cap. A white apron would be worn when working with the patients.

Cheyenne Autumn & Silvermyst mew:
I think our meowmie would have drawn the line at the HATS! Maybe the frilly dresses with the petticoats but those flowery hats would have been plopped off at the first opportunity! We could sleep in the hats...would make a nice kitty bed!

From Servo:

My meowmie would have loved the dresses in the Victorian era. The frills and flowers seem so beautiful and feminine. She would have loved those beautiful big hats too although I think she would have had to do alot of neck exercise to hold her head up. It would be a delightful change from the cloths I am used to seeing her wear. I know that no respectful Victorian lady would EVER wear a tee-shirt ...let alone one that said "I'm with Stupid!" I think furdad would have liked seeing her in all that finery too.

My meowmie loves ATV (all things victorian) so she does like the clothing...but only to look at! The clothes sound uncomfortable and cramped. No wonder those queens were CRANKY!!! My meowmie usually wears jeans and a t-shirt, sometimes a dress if she's in a good mood!
