Wither the future of Beast Wars
photo

I wonder at times what the future holds for the Beast Wars Transformers, if any. It was the series that seemed to bring Transformers back from extinction, featuring innovative designs and alternate modes never before seen, and in some cases not seen since. Sure, Beast Wars didn't have the success of the current movie line, but it didn't have a movie behind it (at least not in the United States). It did have an Emmy-award winning television series that featured amazing CGI for it's time and characterization unparalleled to any other Transformers cartoon.

Sure, we just had the 10th Anniversary toys, but that was it. The shame about that line, in my opinion, is that it left out a number of key characters in the Beast Wars series. Sure, we had our first (and so far only) build-a-figure in Transmutate, but where was Airazor? Tigatron? Blackarachnia? Inferno? Depth Charge? Rampage? The Transmetal and Transmetal 2 versions of some characters? There was a lot of potential to celebrate Beast Wars turning 10 years old.

When Optimus Primal and crew turn 20 or 30, will anyone really care? Have we forgotten those who possibly saved Transformers from dying off in stores across the country, across the world? I don't know about anyone else, but when I think Inferno, I think of the Beast Wars character first and the G1 character second (and the Mini-Con third). These characters and their story need to be remembered. They may have divided a fandom, but they paved the way for the current line and I feel they deserve some notable credit. I'd love to see the line reimagined, the equivalent to the Classics line only for Beast Wars characters. For the love of Mike, let's get Rhinox a decent toy, eh?

Classics for Beast Wars is an idea about ten years too early and even then I don't think it'll happen. Hasbro refreshes the line too often for any one incarnation to stick in people's minds. I think it's a little sad that Beast Wars made it possible for more of the same overrated cars and trucks to eventually return. I guess you'll just have to be happy with the little Titaniums and Robot Heroes? At least they're keeping it alive somewhat. And Blackarachnia is in the new cartoon. So BW does have a legacy that survives to this day in a ways.

Yeah, I'll take what I can get. Those Titaniums aren't so hot though, but I'll be getting the robot heroes versions. Looking forward to seeing the new BA in action.
