''Gypsy'' is a wonderful movie with extraordinary performances by both Natalie Wood and Rosalind Russell. The story centers around Mama Rose( Rosalind Russell)who is the stage mother from hell. Her boyfriend is Uncle Jacko a.k.a Herbie Somers. She gives the attention to the younger daughter with the most talent, who is June. Louise( Natalie Wood) is kind of left out, she is clumsy and useless, so her mother doesn't really give much attention, of love for that matter to her. They have there own show, along with boys, and they are a hit, for a while. When vaudeville goes sour, they are all washed up. The boys are fed up with the act, and they are too old to do there cutsey kiddy numbers. Although the act is washed up, Broadway scouts think that June has the potential to make it big. June gets fed up with her mother and decides to go away....She gets married to Jerry who is one of the boys from their act. The boys leave also, all is left is Louise, Herbie, and Rose. Mama Rose soon gets an idea....She will make Louise a star! there is one problem though..... Louise is shy and not too cute, clumsy, a kind of tomboy. Mama doesn't care.Living vicariously through her daughters is what she does best. She hires some girls into the act, which is hopeless, because they posses no talent. Down in the dumps with no money, they get hired for a job. It ends up that it is The Witchita Opera House- filled with personalities such as Electra, Tessie Tura, and Mazeppa. They figure that their only going to be there for 2 weeks so they accept. After the 2 weeks Rose and Herbie( who has done everything for them so far, even going along with the antics which Rose has put him through all these years!) will get married. At the end of the weeks, a stripper got arrested for larceny and they need a last minute replacement. Mama Rose, hearing this says that Louise can do it. Always being faithful to he mother, Louise decides to do it. This makes Herbie angry and he says he will not get married to Rose. Louise puts on a blue dress she was making for Tessie, and gloves that Tessie gave to Rose for the wedding. She stares in to the mirror and realizes that she is a pretty girl. Modestly she sings the let me entertain you number and a Star is Born.......Gypsy Rose Lee! She eventually becomes the most popular stripper in the biz and shuts out her mother. At the end of the movie they hug and talk and fix everything up, appreciating each other. |
