Munkustrap- Munkustrap is the Jellicle leader on Earth and next in line to take over Old Dueteronomy's job when he gets too old to handle it. Munkustrap is also said to be the storyteller of the tribe, informing the younger kittens who haven't been to the Jellicle Ball yet, what it's all about. Munkustrap is an important character who sings many songs, and sings the opening line in the show. In the video, Munkustrap is played by Michael Gruber, on of the three cast members from New York. Songs- The Old Gumby Cat - The Pekes and the Pollicles - Invitation to the Jellicle Ball (2nd half) - Old Dueteronomy Old Dueteronomy- Old Dueteronomy is the Jellicle leader. Once a year, for the Jellicle Ball, he comes down from his home in the Heaviside Layer to choose one cat to go back with him and be reborn in another cat life. He's very old and is said to be Munkustrap's grandfather. He's also probably related to other cats in the tribe. In the video, he is played by Ken Page, also from New York. Ken Page was also the original Dueteronomy on Broadway. Songs- The Addressing of Cats Alonzo- Alonzo is mostly a chorus cat, but he helps out in rescuing Demeter when Macavity tries to take her away. Some people believe that when Munkustrap takes over Old D's place in the Heaviside, Alonzo will take over Munkustrap's job as storyteller and next in line for Jellicle leader. He seems to have an interest in Cassandra, and they are often seen together in the video. He is played by Jason Gardiner. Rum Tum Tugger- Tugger plays an important part in CATS because he's the one who sings about Mr. Mistoffelees, telling the other Jellicles that Mistoffelees is the cat who can bring back Old Dueteronomy after he is kidnapped by Macavity. He likes to flirt a lot and the younger kittens all have an obsession with him. Etcerera loves him the most, but Tugger can often be seen in the video flirting with Bombalurina. He is played in the video by John Partridge, who also played Munkustrap in Germany. Songs- The Rum Tum Tugger - Old Dueteronomy - Mr. Mistoffelees Mistoffelees- Misto is a magic cat, who plays an important role in the play when he brings back Old Dueteronomy after he is kidnapped. In the video, he is often seen with Victoria and the two are said to be a couple. In some productions, Mostofelees sings Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, but in the video, he doesn't sing anything but a few solos and the Invitation to the Jellicle Ball. Mistoffelees' main role seems to be dancing, his song is for most people, the highlight of the show and one of the hardest and most exciting dance number. In the video, Misto is played by Jacob Brent, the 3rd cast member from New York. Mr. Brent also played Misto from 1995-1999 on Broadway and is recently playing him in the New London theatre. Songs- The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball (1st half) Victoria- Victoria is mostly a chorus cat, but she is the most observable from the audience due to her pure white fur. Vicki is a kitten who matures at the Jellicle Ball when she does her mating dance with Plato (She does it with him instead of Misto because her and Plato were the same age...Misto was too old and already matured from a kitten to a teenager). Vicki is innocent and has a tender and forgiving heart, which she displays often throughout the play when she tries to get close to Grizabella to comfort and nuzzle her. She is always getting pulled away from Griz by the elder cats, but finally, in the end, it is Vicki who is the first to approach Griz and let her know that she is loved. Vicki, like Misto, is a chorus cat whose main role seems to be dancing. She performs a solo dance in which Mistoffelees joins in and dances with her. In the video, Victoria is played by Phyllida Crowley Smith. Jemima- Jemima is the youngest of the 4 kittens and has a pure and innocent heart like Victoria's. It is Jemima who sings the opening to Memory, telling Grizabella that she understands and forgives her. Like Vicki, she is curious about Grizabella but always gets pulled away by the elder cats. In the video, Jemima is played by Veerle Casteleyn and her voice was dubbed by Helen Massie. Songs- opening in Memory Etcetera- Etcetera is mainly a chorus cat who has a big obsession with Tugger. She can often be seen following him around and screaming when he gets anywhere within 3 feet of her. Electra - Electra, like the other kittens, is mostly a chorus cat. She is in love with Tugger, but not nearly as much as Etcetera. Jellylorum- Jellylorum is an elder cat who knows of Grizabella's past with the tribe and is constantly shooing the younger kittens away from her. Her highlight in the play is when she sings Gus the Theatre Cat about her grandpa, Gus, who is a retired cat actor. Songs- Gus the Theatre Cat Jennyanydots- Jennyanydots is an older cat, but not an elder. She assists Jellylorum in shooing the kittens away from Grizabella. She is known to teach the mice and cockroaches how to sew, and teach them manners. She is called the Gumby Cat by many of the other cats. Songs- Bustopher Jones Grizabella- Grizabella is an old cat who, many years ago, was known as the Jellicles as The Glamous Cat. But she abandoned the tribe and became a prostitute and now the Jellicles won't allow her back in the tribe. Throughout the play, Griz is reminicing on her days as the Glamour Cat and in a last effort to get the cats to accept her, she sings Memory. Finally, she gets through to them and they choose her to go up to the Heaviside Layer with Old Dueteronomy to be reborn in another cat life. Griz is played by Elaine Page in the video, who was also the original Grizabella in London. Songs- Grizabella the Glamour Cat - Memory -Memory (reprise) Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer- Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are the two notorious cat burglars who are known throughout the junkyard for their evil ways. They live in an expensive hom, Victoria Grove, and the family never really does anything about their misbehavior when they steal various items around the house. Mungojerrie is said to work for Macavity and is played by Drew Varley in the video. Rumpleteazer is played by Jo Gibb, and, contrary to what is said in the credits, their voices are not dubbed. Songs- Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer Demeter- Demeter is a paranoid cat who is scared of most toms because years ago, she was kidnapped by Macavity and abused by him. She does, however, begin to trust Munkustrap, who is said to be her mate, at the end of the play when he saves her from again being taken by Macavity. In the video, Demeter is played by Aeva May. Songs- Macavity the Mystery Cat Bombalurina- Bomy is said to be the female version of Tugger. She flirts a lot and it is rumored that she had an affair with Macavity. She's good friends with Demeter and Bomby, throughout the video, can be seen comforting her. She is played by Rosemarie Ford in the video. Songs- Macavity Cassandra- Cassandra is a siamese cat, the only purebread in the junkyard. She's the only cat that doesn't wear any arm or leg warmers and she seems to know that she's a beautiful purebread cat Cassandra plays an important part in the video when Mistoffelees chooses her as his assistant in bringing back Old Dueteronomy. But other than that, she's a chorus cat. In the video, Cassie is played by Rebecca Parker. Exotica- There isn't that much to say about this cat. She's a chorus cat and doesn't have her own song, dance, or solos. Macavity- Macavity is an evil cat who all the Jellicles fear, especially Demeter. During the Jellicle Ball, Mavaity makes an appearance to kidnap Old Dueteronomy and to try to take Demeter too. But Munkustrap stops Macavity before he can take away Demi and the two cats fight until Munkustrap can't fight anymore. Then Alonzo takes over for him, and before long, all the Jellicles join in and Macavity dissapears in a flash of electricity. "Macaity's not there..." Plato- Plato is a chorus cat who does his mating dance with Victoria. He chooses to do his dance with her because they are both the same age and were ready to become adults/teenagers at the same time. Tumblebrutus- Tumblebrutus acts kittenish throughout the entire play, but he's not a kitten...he's more of an adult but he is still a kitten at heart. His best friend is Pouncival and the two cats can always be seen playing together and doing flips. Pouncival- Pouncival is good friends with Tumblebrutus and seems to have a crush on Jemima. They're about the same age, though Pouncival is a bit older, so maybe they'll do their mating dance together at the next Jellicle Ball. Coricopat and Tantomile- Coricopat and Tantomile are the two psychic twins. Along with Mistoffelees, they are the first to sense Old Dueteronomy's presence and the first to notice other things that happen throughout CATS. Asparagus (young)- Asparagus is mostly a chorus cat without an important role in the play. Asparagus (older)- Gus is Jellylorum's grandfather and together they sing Gus the Theatre Cat, where Gus tells about the days when he was still young and an actor. In the video, Sir John Mills plays Gus. He tells about how he played the part of Growltiger in his youth but kitten actors nowadays don't get trained like Gus did a long time ago. They sing this song to Old Dueteronomy in hopes that Gus will be the chosen cat to go to the Heaviside Layer. Maybe he will be next year... Songs- Gus the Theatre Cat Bustopher Jones- Bustopher Jones is famous in the cat world for his golfing skills. He is a large black and white cat who golfs with a giant spoon. Jennyanydots seems to have a crush on him and at the end of his song, he gives her a flower which causes her to faint. Songs- Bustopher Jones Rumpus Cat- Rumpus Cat is the hero in the story that Munkustrap tells to entertain Old Dueteronomy during the Jellicle Ball. He tells about two groups of dogs called the Pekes and the Pollicles, and how they start fighting and no one can get them to stop. Then Rumpus Cat comes along and scares off the Pekes and the Pollicles and is made a hero in the story. |
