Idea's for an Evening Garden

This elegant scented garden of white flowers and variegated leaves is beautiful in day light or moon light. Perfect for a terrace or patio.

Clematis " Montana" for the back wall, or terrace with a height of 22 to 40 feet and a spread of 6 to 10 feet this plant is a vigorous grower. Fully hardy, zones 6-9, bearing masses of single white flowers 1 1/2 to 2 inches across, with yellow anthers and oval leaves. Flower stems produce direct from the previous seasons ripened stems. Prune after flowering to allow new growth to be produced and ripened for the next season. Remove dead or damaged stems and cut back other shoots that have out grown their allotted space.

New Guinea Impatiens "Spectra White". This annual has a height and spread of 10 to 12 inches and form a compact succulent sub-shrub with branches growing 1 to 2 feet tall by summers end. Leaves are long, narrow, green, bronze or purple.
Likes fertile, moist soil high in organic matter. These plants like sun as long as their roots are kept moist. Incorporate a slow release fertilizer in the soil before planting. Should be planted after all danger of frost has passed and ground is warm.
Propagate by seed or cuttings. Sow 10-12 weeks before planting outside. Germinate at 75 to 80 degrees F.   DO NOT COVER SEEDS! Seeds need light to germinate, mist to keep moist.
Can be used in baskets, containers, borders and beds.

Variegated English Ivy has a height of 30 feet with a 15 foot spread. A creeping, or climbing vine with dark glossy leaves marked in white. Zones 6-9. Woody stemmed trailing perennial with self-clinging climbers with adventurous rootlets, used for covering fences, walls and as a ground cover. Takes a year or 2 to become established, but thereafter growth is rapid. On the ground and while climbing, bears a roughly, triangular, lobed leaves. Half hardy and will do well on north facing wall.
Well drained alkaline soil. Prune to control height and spread and to remove any damaged growth. Propagate in summer by soft wood cuttings or rooted layers.
Red spider mites can be a problem when grown on a south facing wall or in dry conditions.

Marguerite Daisy: height and spread is 3 feet with mounds of white daisies with yellow centers in summer. Grown as an annual in the northern part of the U.S. Likes average, well drained soil and full sun.

Variegated Ground Ivy: This perennial has a height of 5 to 6 inches and spread 4 feet. It is a creeping plant with round, scalloped leaves and squared stems edged in white.

Lavender Cotton: height 2 to 2 1/2 feet with a spread of 2 1/2 to 3 feet. This plant has button like yellow flowers in spring, aromatic fern like grey/green leaves. Likes average, well drained soil.
Zones 6-9.

Other Evening Garden Plants

Nicotiana "Peace Pipe" perennial, grown as an annual and semi-evergreen shrubs. Fully hardy to frost tender, min 34 degrees F. ( 1c). Needs sun and fertile, well drained soil.
Propagate annuals and perennials by seed in early spring, shrubs by seed in spring or by early semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Moonflower: Evergreen soft stemmed twining climber with prickly stems that exclude a milky juice when cut. Height can reach 22 ft or more. Frost tender, min 50 degrees F ( 10c) Oval, or sometimes 3 lobed leaves are 8 inches long and expanded at the mouth 6 inches across. Open at night in summer.

Petunia "The Pearl Mix" perfumed pink or white summer blooms; green leaves, 1 ft. tall, all zones. Needs well drained soil in full sun. Will tolerate frost if plants have been well hardened before planting.  Incorporate a slow release fertilizer in soil before planting. Space 12 inches apart to increase branching and bloom, shear plants back 1/2 way in mid summer. Deadheading is extremely important as the plants set seed, flowering is greatly reduced.
Propagate by seed. Start indoors 10-12 days prior to planting outdoors. Seeds are very fine and can be more evenly sown if mixed thoroughly with a pinch sugar. DO NOT COVER SEEDS! They need light to germinate. 10-12 days at 70-75 degrees F. to germinate.

Stock "Legacy Mix": a biennial treated as an annual, it's a native of the Mediterranean coast and is a member of the mustard family. Scented summer blooms on stiff columns with oval shaped leaves, 1 1/2 feet tall. All zones.
Will tolerate light frost and is useful for winter blooms in mild climates. Elsewhere, plant as soon as ground can be turned and is warm. Plant in full sun, in well drained soil, high in organic matter. Space 8 to 15 inches apart.
Propagate by seed. For winter use in mild climates sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior to when ground can be worked outdoors. Seeds take 7 to 10 days to germinate. DO NOT COVER SEEDS, they need light to germinate.

Hyacinth "Carnegie" Fragrant, pure white spring flowers with strap like leaves 8 inches high. Plant bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart, in a sunny, well drained area, in early fall. Winter mulching is advisable in cold climates and may need to be replaced every 2 to 3 years. This plant does need some winter cold and does poorly in zones 9-10.
Propagate by division and bulb sections.
Use in beds and borders.

Lilac "Ellen Willmott": perfumed white flowers on  pointed leaves. Has a 12 foot spread and can reach 15 feet in height.
Likes full sun and well drained, neutral soils. Deadhead after blooming to simulate good flowering each year instead of every 2nd year.
Remove old trunks and unwanted suckers occasionally.
