Scented Walkway
Turn a plain yard path into a lush, scented, romatic walkway. You can start by lining an ordinary yard path with perennial and flowering shrubs. Then add a simple arbor to support climbing roses.
Hybrid Musk Rose " Frances E. Lester" has a height of 10 to 15 ft. and a spread of 5 to 10 ft. This old fashioned scented rose has medium green leaves and pale pink buds which open into single white flowers in summer. Zones 5-9.
Bourbon Rose " Zephirine Droughin" a climbing old fashioned rose with a strong fragrance from summer to fall. This climbing rose has double pink flowers and medium green leaves. Zones 4-9. Sedum S pectabile " Brillant" this clu,p forming perennial has oval, indented, fleshy, grey-green leaves above which flat heads of small star shaped, pink flowers are borne that turn bronze in fall. Fully hardy in zones 4-9 with a height and spread of 18 inches (45cm).
Globe Thristle a summer flowering perennial grown for it's globe like spikey flower heads. Wirey stems produce thristle like rounded heads of powder blue flowers in summer. Narrowly oval leaves are divided and greyish green. Fully hardy. Does best in full sun and poor soil. Propagate by division in autumn or by root cuttings in winter. Height of 4ft. ( 1.2cm) with a spread of 3 ft. ( 1m). Zones 4-9.
Lambs Ears a evergreen mat forming perennial with wooly, grey foliage excellent for a border front or as a ground cover. Bears mauve-pink flowers in summer and has a height of 12 -15 inches ( 30-38 cm) with a spread of 24 inches ( 60cm). Grows in well drained soil and is particulary tolerant of poor soil. Prefers a sunny position. Propagate by division in spring.
English Lavender a bushy evergreen shrub with entire or divided, often grey-green leaves and spikes of small fragrant, blue-purple flowers in summer. Very fragrant. Makes an effective low hedge with a height and spread of 2 ft. Needs full sun and fertile, well drained soil. Trim hedges lightly in spring to maintain a compact habit. Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Zones 6-9.
Phlox " Fullers White" popular, easy to grow clump forming perennial with clusters cup shaped pure white flowers also know as Wild Sweet William. Flowers in May and June when it reaches around 14 inches in height. Likes partial shade.
Lily " Black Beauty" summer flowering bulb with a height of 5 to 6 ft. ( 1.5 to 2 m). Bears outward-facing flattish, green-centered, very deep red flowers with recurved, white margined petals. Needs sun and well drained soil. Propagate by seed in autumn or spring, by bulb scales in summer or by sten bulbits ( where present) in autumn.
Lily of the Valley the birth flower for the month of May is a spring flowering rizomatous perennial. Fully hardy. Likes partial shade and will grow in any soil, but prefers humus rich. Propagate by division after flowering in autumn.
Rubellum a early summer flowering bulb with stem roots; has scattered, narrowly, oval leaves and up to 9 scented but outward facing, broadly, funnel-shaped, pink flowers with dark red spots at bases, each petal is 2 1/2 to 3 inches ( 6-8 cm) long. Needs sun and well drained soil.
English Rose " Mary Rose" a bushy, spreading shrub rose with a height and spread of 4 ft. ( 1.2m) produces moderatly, fragrant, cupped, fully double, rose pink flowers, 3 1/3 inches ( 9cm) across in summer-autumn. Has plentiful leaves. Likes sun and fertile, well drained soil. Propagate by cuttings.
"Alba" Rose: large , freely branching shrub rose with clusters of usually, 5 to 7 semi-double to double flowers of pink or white in mid-summer. Has abundant, greyish green leaves. Very hardy. Grow in full sun and fertlile well drained soil.
Chinese Witch Hazel a autumn to early spring flowering shrub with spicey fragrant frost resistant yellow ribbon like flowers, each with 4 narrowly strap shaped petals. Fully hardy. Needs sun or semi-shade and fertile, well drained, peaty, acid soil, although it will tolerate good deep soil over chalk. Propagate by seed in autumn, by selected softwood cuttings in summer or by grafting in winter. Zones 5-8.
Rosemary is a evergreen shrub grown for it's flowers and aromatic foliage, which can be used as a culinary herb. Frost hardy, but grows best on a south or west facing wall in cold areas. Requires full sun and well drained soil. Cut back frost damaged plants to healthy in spring; straggley old plants may be cut back hard at the same time. Trim hedges after flowering. Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Height 6 feet. Zones 8-10.
