The first meeting

The story commences on Mr Bingley coming to the countryside along with a big party. Mr Bingle is supposed to be a fine young man of large fortune and thus very welcome in this new neighbourhood.Amongst the party he brings are his sisters, brother in law and his friend, Mr Darcy. When Mrs Bennett takes heed of Mr Bingley's arrival she presses her husband into making acquiantance with the new new neighbour so he may form a relation with one of the girls. With relentence Mr Bennett agrees which results in a meeting between the neighbours, the Bennetts and Mr Bingley at a local gathering. Bingley soon rules Jane out as his personal favorite and asks her for 3 dances. They fall in love that same evening. Elizabeth is slighted of by Darcy that same evening which results in her disliking him a lot. She finds him vain and proud and ridicules him to her friends the next day.

Darcy’s negative opinion about Elizabeth changes very quickly. He finds Elizabeth intriguing and stares at her the whole time at the next party. His interest in her increases even more when Elizabeth stays at Netherfield to take care of her sister who fell ill during her stay with Bingley’s sisters. Darcy is impressed by her devotion to her sister. Elizabeth doesn’t like Mr. Darcy though. She finds his manners unpleasant. She likes Mr. Bingley much more. She is glad when she can return home with Jane.

A few days later Mr. Collins arrives at Mr. Bennett’s house. He is a rector and the cousin of Mr. Bennet. When Mr. Bennett dies, Mr. Collins will inherit his fortune. The family doesn’t like him very much. He is a pompous man and Mr. Bennett’s finds him a slimy fellow. The reason of his stay is trying to find a wife. Because Jane is already engaged with Mr. Bingley he tries to pay court to Elizabeth. When the sisters Bennett accompanied with Mr. Collins take a walk to Meryton they encounter Wickham for the first time. He is an officer and the party finds him quite attractive.

That night there is a party and Wickham tells her he and Darcy grew up togethers. Wickham doesn't have many positives things to tell about Darcy. He tells Elizabeth that Darcy refused to give him a church he should get according the will of Darcy's father. Elizabeth is appalled and dislikes Darcy even more.
