OUR FAVORITES
*************
NHT SuperOne Bookshelf Speaker (single speaker)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001ZWSV/entertainmentsit
NHT (Now Hear This) has been making waves in high-end audio
for some time, offering solidly designed speakers at prices
far lower than their stunning sounds could surely command.
The SuperOnes are a marvelous bookshelf design, delivering
sweet and seamless sound across most of the audio spectrum,
rolling off bass only in the lowest octave or so. Sold
individually to allow for either stereo or five-channel
home-theater configuration, these babies are equally at home
in the living room or bedroom, though a home theater setup
would definitely benefit from the addition of a powered
subwoofer.

Yamaha CDC-665 CD Changer
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001ZUPN/entertainmentsit
Yamaha's CDC-665 five-disc carousel changer combines
excellent sound with a superb array of features in a
handsome and easy-to-use package. Particularly endearing is
its carousel tray: the disc that's playing is magnetically
fixed in the player's transport mechanism, letting you pop
the player open to switch four CDs while one is in
play. What makes the CDC-665 truly special, however, is its
exceptionally good sound. The midrange frequencies are
excellent, and vocals in particular sound outstanding--
crystal clear and sharply focused. The CDC-665 is comparable
to machines selling at more than twice its price.

Sony MDR-V900 Studio Monitor Headphones
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001W0D5/entertainmentsit
Sony's MDR-V900 sealed-enclosure headphones offer a
high-grade, ergonomic design and exceptional listening
quality. The comfortable and attractive headset is an
excellent choice for use in places where closed-ear designs
are imperative, such as recording studios or libraries.
Sonically, the MDR-V900s offer clarity without resorting to
excessive high-frequency emphasis and provide deep low
frequencies without succumbing to muddiness or boominess.
Furthermore, they sound great at both low and dangerously
high levels, which may be a testament to their large,
50-millimeter drivers and their potent neodymium magnets.

TOP OF THE LINE
***************
Denon AVR-5700 THX Surround Receiver
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001R3VZ/entertainmentsit
The AVR-5700, Denon's THX-certified flagship surround
receiver, is quite possibly the best single-unit surround
processor/integrated amplifier in the business. All Dolby
Digital, DTS, and 5.1 processing is performed entirely in
the digital domain using latest-generation Analog Devices
32-bit floating-point DSP processor chips working in tandem
with Denon's proprietary DDSC-D (Dynamic Discrete Surround
Decode-Digital) and 24-bit ALPHA DSP technologies. The AVR-
5700 uses premium Burr-Brown 24-bit/96-kHz digital-to-analog
converters for all five main channels as well as the
subwoofer channel, providing high-resolution playback of
24-bit/96-kHz DVD program material (when used in conjunction
with DVD player outputting 24/96 data). The AVR-5700 offers
two pairs of surround- channel speaker outputs, letting you
install two sets of surround speakers--one optimized for
surround-sound music listening, the other for movies.

EXCEPTIONAL VALUE
*****************
Sharp QT-CD114BK Boombox
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JFOF/entertainmentsit
The QT-CD114 is a modest, dependable player in an
attractive, lightweight casing. Offering the holy trinity of
audio features--namely, a CD player, radio, and tape
deck--this machine's primary appeal is its surprisingly
economical interface. The tuner's radial analog dial has a
very fine tuning ratio; the tape deck is controlled by a
six-button configuration; and the CD options are
play/repeat, stop, cue/track forward, and review/track
reverse. A simple two-digit LCD display tells you what
track you're on. There's no programming to worry about, no
shuffling, no preset genre equalizations--just
straightforward operation.

INNOVATIONS
***********
Sharp MD-R3 CD/Minidisc Player/Recorder
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000K1RN/entertainmentsit
What do you get when you cross a minidisc (MD) recorder with
a three-CD changer? Why, Sharp's MD-R3, of course. Sharp
has merged both audio formats into an attractive device
that's optimized for recording from CD to minidisc. A
microphone line input, which is great for simple stereo
recordings and dictation, is a nice bonus. We also liked the
separate CD and minidisc transport controls on the supplied
(and nicely designed) remote. If you're looking for an
all-in-one CD/minidisc recorder to play CDs or copy them for
portable listening, the MD-R3 is probably just the deck for
you.

BESTSELLERS
***********
Panasonic SL-S360 Portable CD Player
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000J43X/entertainmentsit
With a powerful 40-second antishock memory feature, the
Panasonic SL-S360 portable CD player delivers high-quality
sound in a lightweight but durable design. This is the
perfect portable system for anyone seeking high audio
performance at a low price. The SL-S360's advanced features
include repeat track, CD pause, random play, and bass
enhancement via the Super Extra Bass System (XBS). Panasonic
gives you the option of disabling the antiskip feature,
which saves battery power. Without the antiskip, we found
that CDs will play for approximately 25 hours on two AA
batteries.

Diamond Rio PMP 300 MP3 Player
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JBAT/entertainmentsit
The tiny Diamond Rio plays MP3-encoded digital music, the
open Internet standard that's shaking up the music industry.
It stores music files in its 32 MB of RAM instead of on CD
or tape, so it has no moving parts and plays skip free.
About the size of a deck of cards, it weighs under 3 ounces
and can store up to an hour's worth of music encoded at 64
Kbps or half an hour's worth of files at 128 Kbps. The
supplied software lets you upload new selections, delete old
ones, change the playback order, and even create new MP3
files from your own CDs.

Koss CDP1689CP Personal CD Player
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JFI1/entertainmentsit
Koss has an easy and cost-effective way to upgrade your
cassette-based car stereo to a full-featured, CD-quality
sound system. This portable CD player comes packed with
everything you need to enjoy CD sound wherever you go,
including a cassette-to-CD adapter and power adapter that
connects to your car's cigarette lighter. For earthshaking
sound, you'll want to enable the Dynamic Bass Boost Sound
System (DBBS) feature.
