WORD FOR WORD
*************
"I think they make the poster first nowadays. They want to
see that poster in the mind's eye and they want a two-
sentence summary: "This is like 'The Truman Show' meets
'Saving Private Ryan.' They're nervous, the bankers who make
these decisions, about anything they haven't seen already."
--Susan Sarandon on making films today

TOP NEW RELEASES
****************
"There's Something About Mary (Special Edition)" (R)
starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz; directed by the
Farrelly brothers
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305499071/entertainmentsit
Many recent films' unspoken motto is "the raunchier, the
better." However, most don't evolve into as winning and--
oddly enough--as sweet a film as this box-office bombshell,
now on video at a low price. It doesn't hurt to have a
glowing Cameron Diaz starring as the object of affection for
former high school dweeb Ben Stiller, who falls for Mary all
over again. Worth many a repeated viewing, this special
edition contains outtakes and a karaoke track.

"The Silence of the Lambs" (R)
starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins; directed by
Jonathan Demme
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0792842111/entertainmentsit
After two years' absence, this five-time Oscar winner
finally returns to video. With the sequel, "Hannibal,"
still entrenched on the books bestseller charts (and its
big-screen future in doubt), it's a good time to revisit
one of the scariest, most efficiently crafted films of the
genre.

"Eight Men Out" (PG)
starring John Cusack and David Strathairn; directed by John
Sayles
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0792841786/entertainmentsit
"Based on a true story" is a misnomer for most films, but
John Sayles's beautiful retelling of the 1919 World Series
Black Sox scandal proves that historically accurate films
can be captivating. Unavailable on video for years, Sayles's
ensemble drama details the day-by-day aspects of the scandal
and argues that the empathetic, tragic character of the
drama is third baseman Buck Weaver (John Cusack), not
Shoeless Joe Jackson as "Field of Dreams" would have you
believe.

"One True Thing" (R)
starring Meryl Streep, Renee Zellweger, and William Hurt;
directed by Carl Franklin
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0783229747/entertainmentsit
This family drama turned tearjerker certainly has top
pedigree with Oscar nominee Meryl Streep as the stricken,
tough-love mom, and Renee Zellweger as the daughter who
reluctantly returns home. Director Carl Franklin shows us
the same uncluttered style that made "One False Move" and
"Devil in a Blue Dress" such quality films. The mother-
daughter focus to the story is more immediate--and many may
find more watchable--than that of another classic
tearjerker, "Terms of Endearment." Plus, William Hurt does
his best work in years.

WIDESCREEN RELEASES

"Ronin" (R)
starring Robert De Niro and Jean Reno; directed by John
Frankenheimer
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0792842103/entertainmentsit
It would be just dandy if this heist movie were just one
long car chase--the extended action sequences by director
John Frankenheimer are some the best ever shot. The film,
though, is a wonderful throwback to the clean and efficient
thrillers of the '60s, with a capable Robert De Niro
stepping into a Steve McQueen-type role.

INTERVIEW WITH STEVE MARTIN

up in eulogies to director Stanley Kubrick (a big Martin
fan), and something always up his sleeve, Steve Martin is
