Video Games Head Quarters - Editorials

ZELDA PRODUCTION RATE

I am truly glad another Zelda game won't come out for almost four years, because they're just putting them out too fast, and they're losing their novelty. A Zelda game waited for for six years would be savored like a fine wine, swirled in the cup, in the mouth, and finally sliding down one's throat with a beautiful heated flavor never before tasted by these gnarled hands. To curl my fingers around that pad for the very first time, and for the first thing I see to be a scene of Link riding Epona furiously along the crest of Gerudo Valley, as the sun glints off the face of the beautiful mosaic shield and Jewel encrusted sword placed behind the next title. this would thrill me beyond belief. So often games lose their zing for me because I've already seen it all, it just looks, sounds and feels a bit different. These games are all too common. But every now and then a game of epic proportions comes along. Super Mario 64. Ocarina of Time. Banjo Kazooie. Then one plays these games to death, squeezing every last drop of play value out of them just for the bragging rights. And as one finally sets down the controller and folds one's hands to enjoy the fruits of his labors, one realizes: THIS is why I love what I do. THIS is why I endure the criticism, the jabbing, the cries of NERD! and GEEK! This is what makes it all worthwhile. THIS IS WHY I PLAY VIDEOGAMES! And suddenly, one's love is rekindled, and videogames go from that solitary chamber of the heart known as mediocre and boring to being almost the foremost thing in one's life. Then one simply waits for the next game like that, patiently, ever steadfast in his vigil. Then one day... This friends, is why we do what we do. This is what we love. I am willing to endure criticism and joking, for video games come only fifth on my list, after God, Family, Country, and Work. This is why.
