VOCABULARY IN TEACHING READINGCayandrawati Sutiono Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide teachers with some ideas about improving their students ability in reading, especially in increasing their vocabulary by providing word study as an integrated part of reading classes, such as exercises for recognizing word forms, forming new words, and so on. There are three areas for word study. They are function words, content words and word formation. Also, some skills such as recalling and guessing meaning from context for developing vocabulary should be included. Finally, the areas and the skills should be facilitated by building the students’ confidence, and not let the teachers spend too much time on explaining the meaning of words.
