Abstract: In the global era, reading ability is important. Students need to read materials written in English. This research is aimed at finding how well the students do mathematical problems written in  English. The subjects of this research are SMU Kanwil students of Mathematics Department, FKIP Unlam in the year of 1999. The research is done at the end of seventh semester, and the subjects are divided into two groups based on the homogeneity of the students’ scores. Mathematical problems written in Indonesian are given to one group (A) and another group (B) do  the same mathematical problems but written in English. To analyse the speed and the test result descriptive statistics is used. The descriptive statistics used cover the measurement of central tendency and the measurement of dispersion. The result of the research shows that the reading ability of the students in solving simple problems written in English was worse than their ability in solving the same problems written in Indonesian.
