Abstract: Discourse in the language instruction and in our linguistic
tradition is defined as a linguistic unity higher than the sentences, but in the
recent development in the discourse analysis, the definition begins to be
abandoned. The functional and structural-functional views give various
definitions on discourse. The former view regards the discourse as language
uses; and the latter reagards the discourse as an utterance. There are some
approaches used to analyze discourse, including conversational analysis and
pragmatics. The conversational analysis assumes that conversation has regular
structures. The regularity can be seen in terms of turn-taking patterns,
adjecency pair, and
preference. The pragmatic approach assumes that the meaning of discourse depends
on its context. So, according to the pragmatic approach, the important things
are the understanding of implicature aspects of conversation, the use or
deviation of
maxim of utterance and maxim of politeness.
Key words:
discourse, conversation, and
pragmatics.
