CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

AS A CONCEPT IN EDUCATION

Abdul Muth’im

Abstract: Contextual teaching and learning is a ‘new’ concept of teaching and learning introduced by the Directorate of Junior High School (Pendidikan Lanjutan Pertama, abbreviated as PLP), Department of National Education. At the beginning, it was designed to be introduced for Junior High School (SLTP) teachers of six provinces: Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South East Sulawesi, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. However, based on some considerations, the program is then broadened for other SLTP teachers all over Indonesia. In addition, the Government also invited some lecturers from some universities to get involved in this activity. The writer is one of them. This paper is meant to show his gratitude for the Directorate of PLP that has invited him to get involved in this very valuable moment and to show his feeling of responsibility to share and disseminate this idea to the people who are interested in the field of education in general, and especially for SLTP teachers, and his colleagues in his university.
