Abstract: This article is aimed at exploring smuggling phenomenon and black market in South Kalimantan in the 19th century. The phenomenon can be described because its source or historical data is available. The source or data is in the form of text-books and manuscripts. Based on historical methods, the smuggling and black market phenomenon in South Kalimantan in 19th century was in line with role and status of Banjarese Kingdom in an international trade. In addition to economical factor, geographical condition of South Kalimantan, especially in waters areas, was also said as the determining factor on the phenomenon.
