CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURES IN BERNARD SHAW’S PYGMALION

Abstract: This study analyzes the utterances of two major characters in Pygmalion with embedded conversational implicatures to find their linguistic forms, the  flouting of Grice’s conversational maxims, and the function of those flouting. Findings show that there are 32 conversations embedding conversational implicatures, which have 17 utterances for declarative, 3 for interrogative, 10 for imperative, and 9 for exclamatory sentences, and also 16 utterances flout the maxims of relation, and 15 utterances flout the maxims of manner.
