DALAM BAHASA DAN BUDAYA CINA PERANAKAN KELANTAN,
MALAYSIA
Teo Kok Seong
Abstract: Kelantan Peranakan Chinese is a
group in Malaysia who have assimilated extensively to Kelantan Malays as well as
Kelantan Thais. This article discusses Malay emotion in their daily social
lives, specifically in the linguistic and cultural domains. Emotion in this
article which is discerned as a conscious quality having great dominance on
expressive behaviour and conscious experience, will be examined in both the
linguistic and cultural realms of the heritage of these assimilated Chinese.
Malay emotion is found to have immense impact in the formation of perceptions
and influencing this group of Chinese in understanding and interpreting the
world around them, besides creating a distinctive personality. Malay emotion in
this article is also deliberated in the context of the survival of this minority
group adapting their “Chinese” culture in a Malay environment, especially in
displaying a moralistic behaviour which is not in conflict to Malay norms and
values.
