Abstract: This article discusses the life of the newly rich family and efforts to pursue social recognition as reflected in William Dean Howells’ the Rise of Silas Lapham. Social aspects in the novel are the focuses of discussion. The newly - rich family is found to be vulgar, arrogant, selfish and have low cultural characteristics. Wealth and money are used to attain the social position that the aristocrat presently deserves.
